Have you bought a T-shirt for a special occasion, but it is still too big? Do not panic! Cotton shrinks, so you can easily shrink it a few sizes. Read on to learn how cotton shrinks and to learn a few techniques that can help you shrink cotton quickly and safely.

To step

Method 1 of 2: With hot water

  1. Wear your new, well-fitting shirt. Have fun with your shirt now that it fits much better!

Tips

  • This does not work with all fabrics. It works especially well if it is 100% cotton.
  • Wash several cotton items that you want to shrink at the same time.
  • After taking it out of the hot water, wait to hold until your garment has cooled down, don't burn your hands!
  • Let it air dry after removing it from the hot pan, or put it in the dryer.
  • Once you shrink it, it won't shrink any further after that.
  • Add a cup of white vinegar to the water and the colors will remain beautiful. It may still run off a bit, so shrink all garments separately.
  • To instantly make your T-shirt look smaller, just put it on and gather the bottom together with a rubber band. Tuck that tied-up piece under your shirt.
  • T-shirts labeled "pre-shrunk" cannot shrink further.
  • Some people add alum to the washing machine in an effort to shrink clothes further. It is not clear whether it is effective, and it can weaken the fabric if overused, so try at your own risk.

Warnings

  • Don't do this with a T-shirt with a print - the print can melt.
  • This technique may not be suitable for women's shirts that are fitted. The shape may not be retained.
