This article will teach you how to delete a group conversation on Messenger from your chat list via iOS, Android or Messenger Web.
To step
Method 1 of 3: With an iPhone or iPad
- Open the Messenger app on your iPhone or iPad. Messenger's icon resembles a blue speech bubble with a white lightning bolt inside.
- If you are not automatically logged into Messenger with your device, you will need to enter your email or phone number and password to login.
- Press the Home icon. This looks like a little house in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- When Messenger opens to a conversation, you must press the Back button to return to your Home screen.
- Press the Groups tab. This button is located below the Search bar in the top right corner of the screen. This will display a list of all your group conversations.
- Tap on the group you want to delete. This will display the conversation in full screen.
- Press the group name. This one is at the top of the conversation. Clicking on this will open the "Groups" page.
- Scroll down and press a group member. The "Group" page displays all members of this group conversation. Press a member to view options for this contact.
- Press Remove from Group.. This option is in red letters at the bottom of the screen. Yes, this action will have to be confirmed in a pop-up window.
- Press Delete to confirm. This will remove the member from the group conversation.
- Remove all other group members. You must remain the last person in the group conversation before deleting the conversation.
- If you leave the group without removing all other members, the group conversation will continue without you.
- Press Group Leave. This option is in red letters at the bottom of the "Group" page. You will have to confirm this action in a pop-up window.
- Press Exit to confirm. This will automatically remove the group conversation from your conversation list.
- The conversation history will be saved in the Archived Conversations folder. You can view or delete your archived conversations via Messenger Web.
Method 2 of 3: With Android
- Open the Messenger app on your Android. Messenger's icon resembles a blue speech bubble with a white lightning bolt in it and is in your apps list.
- If you are not automatically logged into Messenger with your device, you will need to enter your email or phone number and password to login.
- Press the Home icon. This looks like a little house in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- When Messenger opens to a conversation, you must press the Back button to return to your Home screen.
- Press the Groups tab. This button is located below the Search bar in the top right corner of the screen. This will display a list of all your group conversations.
- Tap on the group you want to delete. This will display the conversation in full screen.
- Press the info icon. This looks like an "i" inside a circle in the top right corner of the conversation. This will open the "Group Information" page.
- Tap the icon with three vertical dots next to a group member's name. This will open a slideout menu.
- Tap Remove from group in the slideout menu. This will remove this contact from the group conversation.
- Remove all other group members. You must remain the last person in the group conversation before deleting the conversation.
- If you leave the group without removing all other members, the group conversation will continue without you.
- Tap the three vertical dots icon in the top right corner of the "Group Details" page. This will bring up a slide-out menu with your group options.
- Press Leave Group in the slideout menu. This will automatically remove the group conversation from your conversation list.
- The conversation history will be stored in the Archived Conversations folder. You can view or delete your archived conversations via Messenger Web.
Method 3 of 3: With Messenger Web
- Open the Messenger app in a browser on a desktop. Type www.messenger.com in the address bar of your browser and press ↵ Enter on your keyboard.
- If you are not automatically logged into Messenger with your device, you will need to enter your email or phone number and password to login.
- Click on a group in the left panel. You will see a list of all your group and personal conversations on the left side of your browser window. Find and click on the group you want to delete.
- You can also use the "Search Messenger" bar in the top left corner if you remember the name of the group, members or the content of the conversation.
- Click on the info icon. This looks like an "i" inside a circle in the top right corner of the group conversation. This will show the details of the group on the right side of your screen.
- Click on the three horizontal dots next to a group member. This button will appear next to each group member when you hover your mouse over their name. This will bring up a slideout menu.
- Click Remove from Group in the drop-down menu. You will have to confirm this action in a pop-up window.
- Click Delete to confirm. This is a red button in the lower right corner of the menu. This will remove this contact from the group conversation.
- Remove all other group members. You must remain the last person in the group conversation before deleting the conversation.
- If you leave the group without removing all other members, the group conversation will continue without you.
- Click on the gear icon on the right panel. This is under the info button in the top right corner of your screen. This will bring up a slide-out menu with group options.
- Press Delete in the slideout menu. You will have to confirm this action in a pop-up window.
- Click Delete to confirm. This is a red button in the lower right corner of the menu. This option will delete the group conversation from your conversation list and also permanently delete the conversation history.
Warnings
- You must be an administrator of the group to remove other people from the conversation. You can still remove a group from your conversation list without removing other members, but the conversation will continue for the other members.
