A banana clip is a simple plastic hair clip that helps pull your hair back and secure. You can use the clip to create different hairstyles, such as a classic ponytail, a curly updo or a three-dimensional braid. A banana clip works best for hair that falls to the shoulders or is longer.

Method 1 of 3: Create a classic ponytail

1. Choose a banana clip. These simple plastic hair clips can be found on the hair accessories shelf at the drugstore or on the internet. They are available in many different colors. If you don't want the clip to show in your hair, choose a clip in your hair color.
2. Open the clamp. The clamp has a snap closure at the top to secure it so that your hair stays put.
3. Gather your hair in the center of the clip. Make sure all your hair is in the clamp. Pull your hair as tight or as loosely as you want.
4. Curl your hair. In this modern way of updating, you use the clamp to secure a lot of curls on top of your head. The clip is not visible and your curls are in the shape of a Rihanna fauxhawk on your head. Great, isn't it? If you don't have curly hair yet, curl your hair.
   • Tight corkscrew curls look great with this style and stay put.
   • If you don't want to use a curling iron or hot rollers, curl your hair without using heat using a T-shirt or creating pin curls. Curl your wet hair the night before.
5. Open the clamp. Loosen the clasp at the top of the clamp and open the clamp wide.
6. Click the clip to secure your hair. Close the clip close to your head to hold your hair together and click it into place. The end of the clamp should be a few inches from your forehead.
7. Pin curls around the clip to hide it. Wrap your curls around the clamp so that the ends fall over edges to hide it. Pin the curls with bobby pins to hide the clip. Finish your hairstyle with hairspray.

Method 3 of 3: Make a three-dimensional braid

1. Put the clip around the braid. Open the clip and hold it against your head so that the ends of the clip are on either side of your braid and the end of your braid falls just over the hinge. The end of your braid should extend over the clamp.
2. Loosen up your braid to hide the clip. Now that the clamp is in your hair, look at which places it can be seen. The braid should completely hide the clamp. If you see the clip sticking out of your braid somewhere, gently loosen that part of the braid a bit to hide the clip. Use bobby pins if necessary.
3. Tuck in the bottom part of the braid. All you have to do now is tuck the un-braided part of your braid into your hair and pin the hair. It may help to turn the end around before tucking it in. Use hairspray to keep your hair in place.
   • If your hair is too heavy to pin up, just let the end of the braid hang down.
   • You can also braid the end of the braid and secure it with a rubber band.
