Dead Eye is a Red Dead Redemption skill that allows you to slow down time and fire precision shots. You will automatically unlock this skill not far from the start of the game and improve it several times during the adventure. When you've improved the skill as far as possible, you can mark the exact spot you want to shoot. To use Dead Eye, you will need to fill your Dead Eye meter.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Using Level 1 of Dead Eye

1. Complete at least the second mission, "New Friends, Old Problems.’ This mission is for Bonnie Clyde and completing him will unlock the first level of Dead Eye. You will not be able to use the ability until you complete this mission.
2. Fill your Dead Eye meter. Using Dead Eye will deflate the meter on the right side of the map. You can fill your meter by killing enemies or by using certain items. Shooting enemies will fill your meter faster. The meter does not need to be completely filled to use Dead Eye, but you will have less time. You can use the following items to fill your meter:
   • Snake Oil
   • Chewing Tobacco
   • Moonshine (Provides an infinitely filled meter for 10 seconds)
   • Tonic (Made with the plants collected after completing Survivalist Challenges and reaching Legendary Rank in them.)
3. Use a firearm. You can use Dead Eye most effectively with a firearm, preferably one that contains multiple bullets. You can also use Dead Eye with throwing weapons like the Throwing Knife, but you can only throw one at a time when you activate Dead Eye.
   • You cannot use throwing weapons or Dead Eye in a multiplayer game.
4. Press and hold the Aim button to enter Aiming mode. You have to aim to get into Dead Eye mode. Hold down L2 or lt to aim your firearm.
5. Push the right lever inward to activate Dead Eye mode. While aiming, click r3 or rs to activate Dead Eye mode. There will be a red haze on your screen and the action will slow down to a fraction of the normal speed.
   • In Dead Eye mode you are invulnerable.
6. Press r3 or rs again to exit Dead Eye mode. You will not get back what you have already used from the meter.
7. Press the fire button to fire in Dead Eye mode. In the first level of Dead Eye mode, time will slow down and you can aim and fire. Press r2 or rt to fire in Dead Eye mode.
   • Using Dead Eye's Level 1, you can only fire one bullet at a time

Part 2 of 3: Using Level 2 of Dead Eye

1. Improve Dead Eye to Level 2 by continuing the storyline. Eventually you will unlock the next level of Dead Eye mode during the mission "You Shall Not Give False Testimony, Except for Profit", which you get from Nigel West Dickens. In the Level 2 version of Dead Eye you have the option to mark multiple targets so that they are all shot in one fell swoop.
2. Use Dead Eye's Level 2 to mark targets. If you enter Dead Eye mode after upgrading it to Level 2, you will be able to automatically mark targets by moving your reticle over them. Enter Dead Eye mode and then move your reticle over multiple targets. You will automatically see small markers appear on them as you move your reticle over them.
3. Shoot your marked targets. After marking targets using Dead Eye's Level 2, press r2 or rt to fire. Marston will shoot all marked targets in quick succession. Marston will automatically shoot at all marked targets when the Dead Eye meter runs out.
   • Even if someone seeks shelter, you will still shoot them. It is recommended that targets close to cover are marked first so that they have less time to flee before they are shot.

Part 3 of 3: Using Level 3 of Dead Eye

1. Improve Dead Eye to Level 3 in Mexico. You can unlock the third level of Dead Eye after reaching Mexico and meeting Landon Ricketts in Chuparosa. Complete the mission "The Gunslinger's Tragedy" to unlock the third level of Dead Eye.
2. Mark your targets manually through Level 3 of Dead Eye. The third level of Dead Eye gives you the most control, but it is also the hardest to learn to use. While in Dead Eye mode you must press r1 or rb to mark a target. You can mark as many targets as there are bullets in your weapon.
3. Shoot your marked targets. After marking your targets in Dead Eye mode, press r2 or rt to fire. All marked targets will be shot in the same way as in Level 2.
4. Use Level 3 of Dead Eye to take bullseye shots. You can use this advanced aiming system to shoot incredibly well. Examples include: killing someone with a shot in the head five times and shooting someone's firearm from his / her hand. Once you enter Dead Eye mode you need to consider the situation and choose the most effective targets.
   • Shooting a rider's horse will delay the rider for a moment.
   • By shooting the firearm from someone's hand, you give yourself more time, or you save the person's life. This depends on the situation.
   • Using Dead Eye's Level 3, some hunting challenges will be much easier, especially when it comes to bird hunting.

Tips

• Use Dead Eye if you are surrounded. It will make you invulnerable and you can also take out multiple enemies at the same time.
• Dead Eye vision illuminates dark areas, which is great at night and in caves.
• When you activate Dead Eye, the weapon you are currently using will be automatically reloaded.
• Dead Eye makes your weapons a bit more powerful than usual.
