Hearthfire is an expansion for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that allows players to adopt children and build houses, buildings and other additions to your home from scratch. Players cannot begin Hearthfire until after speaking to the Jarl in Morthal, Dawnstar, or Falkreath and completing the required quests.

To step

  1. Start the Hearthfire expansion. A messenger will give you a letter stating that land has become available to buy.
  2. Go to the Jarl's Hall in Dawnstar, Falkreath or Morthal. These cities have Jarls from whom you can buy land.
  3. Talk to the Jarl. The Jarl will give you a quest that you must complete before you can buy land.
  4. Complete the quest the Jarl gave you. The tasks differ per city. For example, if you are going to talk to the Jarl in Falkreath you will have to kill the bandit leader at the Bilegulch Mine.
  5. Return to the Jarl after completing the quest. The Jarl will grant you the title of Thane, granting you the right to purchase land under the Jarl's jurisdiction.
  6. Select the option where you ask the Jarl if there is land for sale. The Jarl will direct you to his "steward" (steward) to complete the purchase.
  7. Tell the flight attendant you want to buy a house. It costs 5,000 gold pieces to buy a piece of land.
  8. Select the option to buy land. The flight attendant will give you the title deed to your land.
  9. Use your map to find the plot of land you bought from the Jarl. When you get there, tools and instructions will be ready for you. You can now build houses and adopt children with the Hearthfire expansion.

Tips

After purchasing land from the Jarl, consider making your Housecarl a flight attendant. This allows you to buy planks, stone and clay directly from your Housecarl.
