This article teaches you how to delete photos you have sent via Facebook Messenger. Keep in mind that you cannot delete your photos from the entire conversation - you can only delete a photo on your side of the conversation, not on the side of the conversation partner. In some cases, photos will remain in the "Shared Photos" section of the conversation. In this case, your only option is to delete the entire conversation.

Method 1 of 4: Delete a photo on a mobile device

1. Open Facebook Messenger. Tap the Messenger app icon. This is a blue speech bubble with a white lightning bolt in it. If you are already logged into Messenger, a list of all your conversations will now open.
   • If you are not logged in yet, please enter your phone number and password to continue.
2. Select a conversation. Tap the conversation with the photo you want to delete. This will open the conversation.
   • If Messenger opens to a page that contains no conversations, first tap the "Home" tab in the bottom left corner of the screen (iPhone), or in the top left corner of the screen (Android).
   • If Messenger opens on another conversation, first tap the back button in the top left corner of the screen to return to the home screen.
3. Find the picture. Scroll up the conversation until you find the photo you want to delete.
   • This process also works for videos.
4. Hold your finger on the picture. A menu will now appear at the bottom of the screen (iPhone) or in the center of the screen (Android).
5. Tap on remove. This option is in the menu.
6. Tap again remove when asked. This will delete the photo from your side of the conversation, but if the other person doesn't delete the photo as well, he or she will still be able to see the photo.
7. Check your shared photos. While a photo you remove from a conversation is usually removed from the "Shared Photos" section, it's a good idea to double-check:
   • Tap the name of your conversation partner at the top of the screen (iPhone) or the ⓘicon in the top right corner of the screen (Android).
   • Scroll down to the "Shared Photos" section.
   • Search for the photo you deleted.
   • If you see the picture here, try closing and reopening Facebook Messenger. This can cause the photo to disappear. If this doesn't help, you will have to delete the entire conversation.

Method 2 of 4: Delete a photo on a desktop computer

1. Open Facebook Messenger. Go to https://www.facebook.com/messages/ in your browser. If you are already logged into Facebook you will now see your most recent conversation.
   • If you are not logged in yet, enter your phone number and password and click "Sign In".
2. Select a conversation. Click on the conversation with the photo you want to delete.
3. Find the picture. Scroll up the conversation until you find the photo you want to delete.
   • This process also works for videos.
4. click on ⋯. This is next to the photo. With this icon you open a menu.
   • If you have sent the photo, the icon is to the left of the photo. If someone else has sent the photo, the icon will be to the right of the photo.
5. click on remove. This option is in the menu.
6. Click again remove when asked. This will delete the photo from your side of the conversation, but if the other person doesn't delete the photo as well, he or she will still be able to see the photo.
7. Check your shared photos. While a photo you remove from a conversation is usually removed from the "Shared Photos" section, it's a good idea to double-check:
   • Find the "Shared Photos" section on the right side of the conversation window (you may need to scroll down on the right side).
   • Search for the photo you deleted.
   • If you see the photo there, try closing and reopening your browser. If this doesn't help, you will have to delete the entire conversation.

Method 3 of 4: Delete a conversation on a mobile device

1. Open Facebook Messenger. Tap the Messenger app icon. This is a blue speech bubble with a white lightning bolt in it. If you are already logged into Messenger, a list of all your conversations will now open.
   • If you are not logged in yet, please enter your phone number and password to continue.
2. Find the conversation you want to delete. This is the conversation with the photo that you cannot delete.
   • If Messenger opens on another conversation, first tap the back button in the top left corner of the screen.
3. Keep your finger on the conversation. This will open a pop-up menu.
   • If you have an iPhone 6S or later, hold your finger lightly on the call to not activate 3D Touch.
4. Tap on Delete conversation. This option is in the menu.
5. Tap again Delete conversation when asked. This will delete the entire conversation, including all photos, from your Facebook Messenger app.
   • Remember that your conversation partner can still access the conversation and photos unless he or she also deletes the conversation.

Method 4 of 4: Delete a conversation on a desktop computer

1. Open Facebook Messenger. Go to https://www.facebook.com/messages/ in your browser. If you are already logged in to Facebook you will now see your most recent conversation.
   • If you are not logged in yet, enter your phone number and password and click "Sign In".
2. Select a conversation. Place your cursor on the conversation with the photo that you cannot delete. You should now see a gray gear icon in the conversation preview.
3. Click on the gray gear. This will open a drop-down menu.
4. click on remove. This is in the drop-down menu.
5. Click again remove when asked. This will delete the entire conversation, including all photos, from your side of Facebook Messenger.
   • Remember that your conversation partner can still access the conversation and photos unless he or she also deletes the conversation.

Tips

• On both mobile and desktop, you may have to close and reopen Messenger before the photo disappears from the "Shared Photos" section.

Warnings

• You can't delete a photo on the other side of the conversation - only on your side of the conversation.
