1 Leave some thread on when you finish sewing. Try to make sure that when you finish sewing, you have at least 8 cm of thread left on the needle so that you can then successfully tie the knot without the needle coming off the thread.
  • 2 Do not sew over other textiles. Place the garment to be repaired on a flat, hard surface (such as a table) to avoid accidentally stitching it to other fabric (such as your clothes).
  • 3 When seams are sewn, sew from the wrong side of the fabric. You should also try to keep the stitches the same length.
  • Part 2 of 2: Tying the knot

    1. 1 Make a loop. Slide the needle under the last stitch and pull on the other side until a loop is formed from the thread on the needle.
      • Note: When using thick single or double threads, the knot can be tied directly at the end of the thread in an alternative way. With one hand on the thread and the other on the needle, place the loop over the needle and pull the needle through the loop. Then carefully lower the knot down to the level of the fabric and tighten. So you will record the result of the work performed.
    2. 2 Tie a knot with a needle. Pass the needle carefully through the loop and tighten. You will have a knot.
      • Note: when using a double thread, it can be removed from the needle (leaving both tails of the thread hanging from the seamy side) and knot the two tails together several times (as when tying laces on shoes, but without bows).
      • To securely fix the thread, repeat tying the knot several times.
    3. 3 Cut off the remaining thread. To make the seamy side of the garment you sewn look neat, cut the tail of the thread sticking out of the knot. Use sharp scissors for this.

    Tips

    • Use a thimble when sewing to prevent injury to your fingers by pushing the needle.
