You can use dried coconut in baked goods instead of fresh ones, such as cookies, muffins, or in savory recipes such as shrimp in coconut flakes. The advantage of dried coconut is that it can be stored longer than fresh coconut, so it can always be on hand at the right time. You can buy ready-made coconut flakes from the grocery section of the store, or make homemade homemade coconut flakes.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Oven Dry

  1. 1 Preheat oven to 177C.
  2. 2 Drill the coconut through the eyelet (soft holes) with a 9.5mm drill. Drain the coconut juice into a bowl or cup. Colored juice or flaked juice means the coconut is bad. The juice should be clear. You can pour out the coconut juice, or drink it however you like.
  3. 3 Place the coconut directly on the wire rack of the preheated oven. Heat the coconut for 20 minutes.
  4. 4 Remove the coconut from the oven, wrap it in a towel, imitating a bag. Hold the end of the towel and hold the coconut still. Hit the coconut several times with a hammer to break it up.
  5. 5 Cut the flesh of the coconut with a sharp knife, such as a cutter. The pulp may have a brown skin where it attached to the shell. Peel the skin with a peeler.
  6. 6 Reduce the oven temperature to 121 C.
  7. 7 Shred the coconut pieces in a food processor and place on a baking sheet. Dry the coconut in the oven for 10-15 minutes.
  8. 8 Cool and transfer the dried coconut to an airtight container. Store in a cool, dry place.

Method 2 of 2: Dehydration

  1. 1 Smash the coconut with a hammer.
  2. 2 Pull out the insides of the coconut.
  3. 3 Grate the coconut pulp on a coarse grater.
  4. 4 If you want to make sweet shavings, add a little sugar (1-2 teaspoons).
  5. 5 Dry the coconut at 57 C for 8 hours.
  6. 6 Transfer the dried coconut to an airtight reusable bag.

Tips

  • If you want to make a sweet coconut, dissolve 1 teaspoon of sugar in 230 ml of water, put the coconut in there and let it soak for 30 minutes. Drain, place the coconut on a baking sheet and bake for 15-25 minutes.
  • If you can't find a whole coconut in the store, buy moist fresh coconut flakes, spread them on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes at 121 C.
  • To use dried coconut instead of fresh one, soak it in water first.
