Radishes ripen incredibly quickly (some varieties only take 3 weeks to grow from seed and ripen) and are very hardy. Its pungent flavor adds spice to soups and salads, and it takes up very little space on site. Read on to find out how to grow radishes.

Steps

  1. 1 Decide which variety you want to plant. As with vegetables, there are countless varieties of radish, both hybrid and cross-pollinated. If you are a budding gardener, consider Cherry Belle; this radish variety matures in just 22 days and has a pleasant, mild flavor. Other popular varieties: White Icicle - has a pungent taste and Daikon - can grow up to 45 cm in length and ripen for 60 days.
  2. 2 Choose a planting site and prepare the soil. Plant radishes in full sun or partial shade with loose, well-drained soil. Remove all rocks from the soil as the roots will bifurcate around any rocks. Add organic matter to the soil before planting.
  3. 3 Plan your radish planting. Radishes are best sown in cool weather, in spring or autumn. Growing radishes during the hot summer months will not yield a good harvest. You can plant your first radish two weeks before the last frost, as it tolerates frost well. The next plantings can be done every 2 weeks. Since the radish grows quickly, it will be in the garden as a guideline for the rows, so consider planting slow-growing vegetables with it. Radish prefers slightly alkaline soil.
  4. 4 Sow the seeds to a depth of 125 mm. at a distance of 250 mm. apart. Once the radishes are germinated, thin them out, leaving about 5cm spacing between the plants, so there is more room for larger varieties. The rows should be about 30 cm apart.
  5. 5 Water the radishes as they grow. Keep the soil moist, but not wet. Frequent and even watering will lead to rapid growth of the radish, as if it grows too slowly it will develop a pungent, woody flavor. Add compost to the soil as needed.
  6. 6 Harvest your crops. The radishes are ready to harvest when the roots are approximately 2.5 cm in diameter, although you can look at the seed packet for ripening times. To harvest, pull the plant out of the ground with your hand. Unlike many root vegetables, radishes should not be left in the ground as they will become tough and flabby.
  7. 7 Peel and store the radishes. Sweep the soil off the radishes with your hand, then store in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks. Wash it with water before use.
