Whether you need to send a package or just take another math exam, calculating the volume of a box is easy enough. Volume reflects the size of an object in three dimensions, that is, for a box, this indicator will determine its capacity. To determine the volume, you will need to take several measurements and then multiply the obtained values.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Calculating the volume of rectangular boxes

  1. 1 Remember that the volume of a rectangular parallelepiped (or an ordinary box) is equal to the product of its length, width and heights. If your box is rectangular or square, then you just need to know its length, width and height. To obtain the volume, it is necessary to multiply the measurement results. The calculation formula in an abbreviated form is often presented as follows: V = L x W x H.
    • Example task: "If the box is 10 cm long, 4 cm wide and 5 cm high, what is its volume?"
    • V = L x W x H
    • V = 10 cm x 4 cm x 5 cm
    • V = 200 cm
    • The "height" of the box may be referred to as "depth". For example, the task could contain the following information: "The length of the box is 10 cm, the width is 4 cm, and depth - 5 cm. "
  2. 2 Measure the length of the box. If you look at the box from above, then it will appear before your eyes in the form of a rectangle. The length of the box will be the longest side of this rectangle. Record the measurement of this side as the value for the "length" parameter.
    • When taking measurements, be sure to use uniform units of measure. If you measured one side in centimeters, then the other sides must also be measured in centimeters.
  3. 3 Measure the width of the box. The width of the box will be represented by the other, shorter, side of the rectangle visible from above. If you visually connect the sides of the box measured in length and width, they will appear in the form of the letter "G". Record the value of the last measurement as "width".
    • Width is always the shorter side of the box.
  4. 4 Measure the height of the box. This is the last parameter that you haven't measured yet. It represents the distance from the top of the box to the bottom. Record this measurement as "height".
    • Depending on which side you place the box on, the specific sides that you designate as "length", "width" or "height" may vary. However, it doesn't matter at all, you just need the results from three different sides.
  5. 5 Multiply the results of the three measurements with each other. As already mentioned, the formula for calculating the volume is as follows: V = Length x Width x Height; therefore, to get the volume, you just need to multiply all three sides. Be sure to include in the calculation the units you used, so as not to forget what exactly the obtained values mean.
  6. 6 Do not forget to indicate the third degree "" when denoting the units of measurement for volume. The calculated volume has a numerical expression, but without the correct indication of the units of measurement, your calculations will be meaningless. To correctly reflect the units of measurement of volume, they should be specified cubed... For example, if all sides were measured in centimeters, then the volume units would be "cm".
    • Example task: "If a box is 2 m long, 1 m wide and 3 m high, what is its volume?"
    • V = L x W x H
    • V = 2 mx 1 mx 4 m
    • V = 8 m
    • Note: Specifying cubic units of volume allows you to understand how many such cubes can be placed inside the box. Referring to the previous example, this means that the box fits eight cubic meters.

Method 2 of 2: Calculating the volume of boxes of other shapes

  1. 1 Determine the volume of the cylinder. The cylinder is a round tube with circles at both ends. To determine the volume of a cylinder, the formula is used: V = π x r x h, where π = 3.14, r is the radius of the round side of the cylinder, and h is its height.
    • To determine the volume of a cone, or pyramid with a round base, the same formula is used, but multiplied by 1/3. That is, the volume of the cone is calculated by the formula: V = 1/3 (π x r x h)
  2. 2 Determine the volume of the pyramid. A pyramid is a figure with a flat base and sides converging at the top to one point. To determine the volume of the pyramid, it is necessary to take 1/3 of the product of the area of its base by the height. That is, the calculation formula looks like this: Pyramid volume = 1/3 (Base area x Height).
    • In most cases, pyramids have a square or rectangular base. In such a situation, the area of the base is calculated by multiplying the length of the base by the width.
  3. 3 To determine the volume of a box of complex shapes, add up the volumes of its individual parts. For example, you may need to measure the volume of a "L" -shaped box. In this case, the box will have more sides to measure. If you break this box into two parts, you can measure the volume of the two parts in a standard way, and then add the resulting values. In the case of an L-shaped box, the longer section can be viewed as a separate long rectangular box, and the shorter section as a square (or nearly square) box attached to it.
    • If your box has very complex shapes, then know that there are many ways to determine the volume of objects of any shape.
