Steps

1. 1 Examine the cage / crate that contains the budgerigar. Are there so many of them that they cannot move? Is the cage or box dirty? Do birds communicate with each other? If a parrot sheds, it means that it is about 6 months old, which is just a good age to start teaching him / her.
2. 2 Choose the bird you like. If she is healthy and happy, then she should be active, and the feathers should be smooth and shiny, not tousled. Its beak and feet should not be crusty.
3. 3 Usually budgies from the pet store are not hand-trained, which means you will have to (if you want to be able to hold a budgie) take some time to hand-train the budgie. If you want your budgie to be hand-trained, then go straight to a specialized parrot breeder.
4. 4 Look for a young budgie. Age can be determined by the black stripes on the forehead. A young parrot (up to 4 months old) has black stripes all the way up to the wax, the soft part above the beak. After 4 months, the streaks disappear.
5. 5 Determine if your budgie is male or female, which can only be done when the stripes are gone. In males the wax is blue. In females, the wax is pale blue, beige or brown. (Males are more likely to speak.)

Tips

• Before buying a budgie, make sure you have enough time for him / her. Many people buy a budgerigar before realizing that they simply don't have enough time to care for and train their new pet.
• Build a real connection with your parrot, make sure he / she knows that you love him / her. This will also help in training the bird.
• Budgerigars can be lonely and want to participate in everything around them.
• Remember, if you buy your budgie a playmate, he / she will lose some of the affection for you.
• Budgerigars can learn to talk, but they will be less willing to do so if they have a playmate.
• Before buying a budgie, make sure you definitely want it. They can live to be fifteen! What will you do for more than ten years if you have to spend several hours a day with a parrot?
• Parrots are not toys, you cannot just play with them and forget about them.
• Parrots love to take warm baths.
• Budgerigars should be removed from their cage for at least 45 minutes every day.

Warnings

• Make sure that the bath water is neither hot nor deep, and always observe the water treatment.
