Skyrim Script Extender, or SKSE, is a third-party plugin for the PC version of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It is one of the main essential tools that allows players to create, modify and update mods. Mods (short for mods) are changes to in-game programming codes for personalization. If you plan to change Skyrim on your computer, you can do so as soon as SKSE is installed.
Steps
- 1 Download SKSE. You can download Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) from the developer's website. Download the "7z archive", not the "installer". A self-installer can cause problems, and generally the process is much smoother when installing the files yourself.
- 2 Download and install 7-Zip. It is a free archiving program that opens .7z files. It can be downloaded from 7-zip.org.
- 3 Extract the SKSE files. After installing 7-Zip, right click on the archive and select 7-Zip → Checkout Here... The folder with the extracted files will be created in the same location.
- 4 Find the Skyrim directory. Skyrim requires Steam to be installed, so you'll have to search in the Steam directory. Most often, the default installation directory is:
- C: Program Files Steam steammapps common skyrim
- 5 Open the folder containing the extracted files in another window. You should have two folders open: the Skyrim game folder and the SKSE file folder.
- 6 Copy everything..dlland.exefiles from SKSE folder to Skyrim folder. These should be all SKSE files, with the exception of two folders.
- When prompted, choose to overwrite or replace existing files.
- 7 Open up.Data Scripts folders in both Skyrim and SKSE folders.
- 8 Copy everything..pexfiles from the SKSE folder to the Skyrim Scripts folder.
- When prompted, choose to overwrite or replace existing files.
- The rest of the files can be left as they are. They are only needed if you plan on coding your own mods from scratch.
- 9 Return to the Skyrim game directory.
- 10 Right click on.skse_loader.exeand select "Create Shortcut".
- 11 Drag the shortcut to your desktop.
- 12 Start Steam. Steam needs to run the modified Skyrim.
- 13 Double click.skse_loader.exeshortcut to launch Skyrim. You can now download and install Skyrim mods that require SKSE.
Tips
- Changing game scripts can damage the game or save file, so make sure you back up your game before making any changes.
