In Windows XP, the volume control program is located in the notification area, which is located in the lower right corner of the desktop to the right of the time and date. In some cases, the volume control program may disappear due to changes in computer settings or due to certain Windows updates from Microsoft. Use the steps below to display or install the volume control program on the Windows XP desktop.

Method 1 of 2: Displaying the Volume Control Program on the Desktop

1. 1 Click on the "Start" button of the Windows XP desktop.

   • In some versions of Windows XP, you may have to first select Sounds, then Speech, then Audio Devices, before clicking Sounds and Audio Devices.

Method 2 of 2: Installing the Volume Control Program on the Desktop

1. 1 Insert the Windows XP installer disc into your computer's drive.

7. 7 Type "expand sndvol32.ex_% systemroot% system32 sndvol32.exe" and press Enter.’
   • If your Windows system files are located in "C: Windows", then enter "expand sndvol32.ex_ c: windows system32 sndvol32.exe" instead.
8. 8 Type "exit" and press "Enter". This command will close the command prompt window.
9. 9 The volume control program will now appear in the notification area of ​​the Windows XP desktop.

Tips

• If you follow the steps in the first method to display the volume control program and still see the error message "Windows cannot show volume control on the taskbar because the volume control program is not installed. To install, use the Add / Remove program "Control Panel", then follow the steps in the second method of the article.
• If your computer does not sound working, then you may have a problem with your sound card. Verify that your computer correctly recognizes your sound card by making sure it appears in the Sound, Video and Game Controllers list found in Device Manager under the Hardware tab in Control Panel.
• If your sound card appears in the Sound, Video and Game Controllers list and you still don't hear sound, try updating your sound card drivers. Sound card drivers can be updated through Windows Update, from your computer's software disc, or from your computer manufacturer's website.
