The bulldozer is a versatile machine for loading construction debris, moving earth or stones, or leveling surfaces. To learn how to operate it, you need training and a large area with a hard and level surface.

Steps

  1. 1 Pick a bulldozer from the rental company or someone who will borrow it. There are many brands and sizes that differ from each other, but you might be better off starting with the Gehl brand or something like that.
  2. 2 Take the time to review the safety tips in the driver's manual. The bulldozer turns quickly, topples easily and changes direction very abruptly!
  3. 3 Find a place like a field, or even larger, empty parking lot to exercise.
  4. 4 Climb into the driver's seat and look around. You will probably notice that the entire back of the car obstructs the driver's view as you squeeze into a small compartment completely inside the car.
  5. 5 Take a look at the controls. They may differ, but they are usually two levers located on the armrests on either side. Each of them will have equipment control buttons located at the top or in the front, like triggers. Usually behind each lever on the control panel there is a diagram explaining it, and now is the time to figure out their purpose - after all, when you are moving, using the wrong lever or pressing the wrong button has immediate consequences!
  6. 6 There should be a seat belt and roll cage, like on an amusement park roller coaster, that closes over your head to secure you in the seat. “Pull the structure down until it snaps into place,” and fasten the belt, if there is one. If the car does not have any of these functions, now is the time to get out of the car and leave it alone!
  7. 7 Find the trigger. Ignition usually works the same way as in a car, but some cars have a starter with a button, and newer ones have a keypad on which you type in the code, but if you look around well, you will find where the engine starts.
  8. 8 Start the engine and look for the throttle stick. This will be a flat metal bar with a rubber grip, usually on the right side of the dashboard, on the right armrest with an opening for forward and backward movement. Usually a turtle is drawn on one end of the opening, and a hare on the other. We will start most of our workouts in the TURTLE position.
  9. 9 Unlock controls. Most of the machines have a hardware locking system. Next to the toolbar there will be toggle switches with a lock symbol below them. Often, when the toggle switch is off, a red light is on under it, and when it is on, a green one. You will need to flip the control switch to the "on" position to start operating the machine. This may require fastening the seat belt or twisting the switch.
  10. 10 Raise the front bucket off the ground. To do this, you will need to pull one of the control levers (or handles) towards the center of the machine. For example, you tilt the left rod of the lever to the right - and this is most often the lever that raises and lowers the bucket. Due to the fact that these levers are multi-functional, you need to be careful not to turn them diagonally - it is better to move straight, left to right, or straight, back and forth! Also, some Case machines use the joystick for driving and the foot pedals for lift and tilt.
  11. 11 Raise the device so high that you can clearly see what is in front of you and lower it, then lift it up again to feel its movement. If the left lever raises the bucket, the right one will change its position. Tilting the right lever to the left will raise the front of the scoop bucket, and moving to the right will unload the bucket. Raise and lower the bucket, scoop and dump it, get used to its movement.
  12. 12 Slowly push the control levers forward. The machine will move forward, and if the travel is idle or in turtle mode, and you move each lever slowly and at the same speed, you will move smoothly and in a straight line. When you pull the control sticks back, you back up, and here you need to remember that you have a very limited view of what is behind you!
  13. 13 Move the levers independently of each other. Pressing only the right lever will turn the machine to the left. Pressing the left knob will turn it to the right. If you keep one lever in front, the machine will drive in circles in the direction the tracks or wheels are pointing, and the stationary side will be skidded.
  14. 14 Practice smoothly moving the levers back and forth, with the bucket at a safe height, in an open area, until you feel the machine and the controls. By moving one lever forward and the other backward, you can turn the machine in a circle equal to the width of the machine.
  15. 15 Drive until you feel comfortable twisting, then drive up to the pile of material to practice using the loading bucket.
  16. 16 Stop the machine just before reaching the pile of material and lower the bucket with the front edge towards the ground. Drive the dozer forward, pushing the loader into the pile and crank the bucket to scoop up the load, stopping forward when it is in the full scoop position, back up and raise it to a height that is safe for transport. You can collect material, turn in, drive forward and load it onto a pile for training. At this stage, there is no "Hurray, I can!" The more you use the machine, the better you will be able to drive it, but it will take many hours of work to get to a good level.
  17. 17 Park your car. Always lower the bucket to the ground and turn it off. Unfasten your seat belt and safety structure and exit the driver's cab.

Tips

  • Bulldozers make sharp turns and their wheels or tracks will plow and bury themselves in the ground as they work, so do not exercise where you can damage your lawn or terrain.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings, not just what you move with your car.
  • Wear ear protection. These cars can be LOUD.
  • Have someone watch you as you exercise, spot obstacles, and watch for hazards.

Warnings

  • Keep children away from the car.
  • Do not work on steep slopes or loose ground.
  • Never operate a bulldozer without seat belts and a reverse signal.
  • Do not operate or carry loads with the bucket raised high. These machines flip easily.
  • Start slowly, the car is extremely powerful and dangerous.
  • Take as long as necessary to read the manual for the machine.
  • Make sure your bulldozer has an easily accessible fire extinguisher.
