The use of a siphon is useful for emptying large containers of water. You can drain the aquarium with a siphon to clean it. Everything you need to do this can be found at the hardware store. Use our tips for using a siphon to drain water.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Using a Siphon Involving the Mouth

  1. 1 Put the bucket on. Place the bucket below the level of the container from which you want to drain the water.
  2. 2 Install the tube.
    • Place one end of the plastic tube on the bottom of a container of water.
    • Lower the other end into the bucket.
  3. 3 Start the water flow. Suck the air out of the end of the tube that you put in the bucket. This end should be lower than the end that is in the container with water.
  4. 4 Let the water drain.
    • Stop sucking air from the tube when the water in it drops below the bottom of the container with water.
    • Return the end of the tube to the bucket.
    • Leave the water to drain.

Method 2 of 3: Using the Water Siphon Submersion Method

  1. 1 Submerge the tube in water. Submerge the plastic tube completely under the water in the container to be drained. Submerge the tube slowly so that air can escape from the tube.
  2. 2 Plug the tube. Plug one end of the tube with your finger. It should completely cover the hole.
  3. 3 Position the siphon tube correctly.
    • Pull the plugged end of the tube out of the water.
    • Place it in a container below the level of the water container.
    • Do not remove your finger from the end of the tube until you have dipped it into the container below.
    • Make sure the end of the tubing in the higher waste container does not pop out of the water.
  4. 4 Open the end of the tube. Remove your finger from the plugged end of the tube. Water will flow through the tube into the lower container.

Method 3 of 3: Drain the water with a garden hose

  1. 1 Position the hose.
    • Lower one end of the hose to the bottom of the container from which you want to drain the water.
    • To prevent the end of the hose from popping out, secure it to the bottom with an object that is heavy enough, but not too heavy, so as not to block the flow of water.
    • Place the other end of the hose where you want to drain the water.
  2. 2 Attach a shut-off valve to this end of the hose while leaving it open.
  3. 3 Connect another hose. Connect the second hose to the faucet at the end of the first hose.
    • Connect the other end of the second hose to the water tap.
  4. 4 Fill the hoses with water.
    • Open the water tap.
    • Let the hoses fill with water.
    • Close the shut-off valve between the two hoses.
  5. 5 Remove the second hose. Disconnect the second hose from the first.
  6. 6 Open the closed tap on the first hose. Water will begin to drain from the container through the hose.
