Commercial sunscreen products typically contain propyl compounds and other chemicals with questionable effects on your health; and all-natural creams are too expensive due to the addition of exotic tropical oils for fragrance. In addition, many commercial products are tested on animals.

You can make reliable sun protection from cheap ingredients by following this recipe.

This recipe is for preparing 300 g of sunscreen.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup olive oil or other natural oil
  • 28 g pure beeswax
  • Pure (US pharmaceutical grade reagent) zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Steps

  1. 1 Heat a glass of olive oil over low heat.
  2. 2 Add 28 g of beeswax, crumbled into pieces if possible (this will melt faster). The grated wax melts even faster. Or buy wax balls.
  3. 3 Stir until the beeswax is completely melted in the olive oil.
  4. 4 Put on gloves and a mask. They will protect you from direct contact with zinc oxide powder. Add one to two teaspoons of USP Reagent Zinc Oxide Powder. Add it a little at a time, stirring constantly. Make sure everything is mixed properly.
  5. 5 Remove the mass from the stove. Pour it into a glass or ceramic jar with a lid.
    • If the jar has a narrow neck, use a piping bag through which you can squeeze the cream.
  6. 6 Refrigerate cream to room temperature before use. Store it in a cool and dry place. Label it with the date of manufacture.

Tips

  • Try other edible, natural oils; anything that is good for food is considered safe for your skin.
  • If your local store doesn't have beeswax and oxide, look for them on auction websites.
  • If you can't find the ingredients you are looking for, buy zinc oxide cream from your pharmacy and use it in place of commercial sunscreen products.
  • Beeswax makes the original product viscous, like a skin cream, keeping the oxide in suspension. You can change the ratio of oil to wax.
  • Titanium dioxide works the same or better than zinc oxide. Both oxides do the "job" of sunscreen.
  • If you like, add a few drops of essential oil for a pleasant scent. But check the properties of the oil, whether it is suitable for protection from sunlight and whether it has any side effects.

Warnings

  • Store the cream away from direct heat, otherwise the wax will melt.In this case, put it in the refrigerator to freeze.
  • It is best to take a saucepan, stirring spoon, and other useful kitchen utensils that are not used for cooking. Check these utensils to know what they are used for.
  • It is possible that the oxide will settle when the product cools or during transition to a hot environment. If the cream is clear when applied to the skin, you need to shake the jar to lift the oxide from the bottom. If you don't, your cream will not be effective. Just a false sense of security! An effective product will be opaque!
  • Zinc oxide itself may have a risk factor, so do not inhale the powder. You need to wear a face mask until the product turns into a suspension.
  • Store the cream out of the reach of children and animals. It cannot be taken internally.

What do you need

  • Pan
  • Stirring spoon
  • Gloves and face mask
  • Stove, even a portable stove will do
  • Glass or ceramic jar with lid for storage
