1 Choose a pair of jeans that you will be making your shorts from. The best choice would be shorts that fit perfectly on the hips and bottom. Remember that baggy jeans will make baggy shorts, and tight jeans will make tight ones.
  • Stretch jeans are not the best option for converting into shorts. They usually have elastic bands or plastic threads in the fabric, so the jeans won't look pretty when you cut them.
  • You can also convert khaki pants into shorts. Just check the label and make sure they are 100 percent (or so) cotton.
  • 2 Let the jeans settle. If you are going to cut jeans that have hardly been worn or washed, then wash and dry them before cutting. This will help the jeans shrink a little and the shorts will not appear shorter after trimming.
  • 3 Determine the length of the new shorts. Depending on the shape of the jeans and how loose or tight they fit on you, you can choose the following lengths:
    • Capri pants are cut right at the calf and look great with heels and sandals.
      • Capri pants are only slightly shorter than regular pants. If you don't want drastic changes, capri pants are just what you need.
      • For capri pants, skinny jeans or "tube jeans" are better suited. Loose jeans are not the best choice for capri pants. You want the capri pants to hug your calves instead of hanging around.
    • Bermuda shorts to or above the knee. Depending on the type of jeans you cut, bermuda shorts can be very comfortable or incredibly stylish.
      • If you are looking for a comfortable pair of shorts that you can wear all summer long, then make a bermuda out of loose jeans.
      • Skinny jeans are also great for Bermuda shorts. They will look especially good with a loose top.
    • Classic shorts 8-12 centimeters above the knee. This is a free style that can be either higher or lower.
      • Both loose and tight jeans work well for classic shorts.
      • For classic shorts, jeans with holes or frayed knees will also work.
    • The short shorts have a hem about 5-8 centimeters. They are great for the beach, especially with bikinis.
      • Tighter jeans look better as shorts. When it comes to loose jeans, your thighs will be too exposed.
      • If you choose this option, be careful! If you want shorter shorts, you can always cut off a couple more centimeters, but if you cut off too much material, you won't be able to get it back.
  • Method 2 of 4: Cutting your jeans

    1. 1 Put on your jeans. Use chalk or pins to mark where you want to trim the jeans: at the calf, at the knees, at the center of the thigh, or above. Remove the jeans after marking the cut.
      • Remember that jeans will get shorter when you leave out the fringe. If you want fringe, then the cut mark should be a couple of centimeters below the final length you want.
      • If you don't need fringes, mark a line one centimeter below your desired length.
      • If you want to tuck the shorts or make some folds, mark the cut at least 7 centimeters below the desired length.
    2. 2 Place your jeans on a flat surface. Desirable on a table, as it is at the level of your waist. If you don't have a table, then you can put them on the floor.
    3. 3 Draw the line you marked with the ruler. Draw a line up a little, going to the edge of the jeans. Draw along the line with chalk. Repeat with the other pant leg.
      • The lines should be slightly below the crotch seam, creating a "v" shape. So, the final look will look much better than just cutting the jeans in a straight line.
      • Don't overdo it with the "v" shape; it should be barely visible unless you want the shorts to be shorter at the hips.
    4. 4 Cut your shorts. Carefully cut the straight line along your mark you made earlier.
      • For best results, use the heavyweight scissors.
      • Don't panic if your line isn't exactly straight. When you do the fringe, these small errors will not be visible.
    5. 5 Try on shorts. Are you satisfied with the result, considering that the shorts will be a couple of centimeters shorter in the end? Perhaps you will understand that you need bermuda shorts, not capri shorts. Take a closer look and make an accurate decision.

    Method 3 of 4: Edge

    1. 1 Consider hemming your shorts. If you don't need fringes, then you need to hem the shorts.
      • Fold over the edge of the fabric and sew on the sewing machine.
      • If you don't have a sewing machine, fold the edge of the fabric and sew it by hand.
    2. 2 Think of the undershoot on the shorts. If you want to make such folds, then you need to sew the hem of the shorts so that there is not a lot of fringe.
      • Use your sewing machine to sew the hem on both legs, or sew by hand.
      • Fold over the edges, then again to form a fold.
      • Use an iron to secure the edges.
      • If you are sure that the folds are what you need, hem them.
    3. 3 Create a fringe. If you want a classic fringe, then it's time to wash your shorts in the washing machine. Set the wash to Normal for a nice fringe line.
      • If you need more fringe, repeat the washing process.
      • If you don't want your shorts to have too long fringes, wash and dry them to the desired fringe length, and then sew the hem of both legs.

Method 4 of 4: Decorating the shorts

    1. 1 Add some glamor. Use beads and sequins to create a beautiful pattern, or use paint to decorate your shorts.
      • If you are unsure of which pattern to sew, sequins and beads can be purchased in pre-made kits at most fabric stores.
      • Fabric dye is also available at similar stores. Use a stencil to create a neat drawing.
    2. 2 Give your shorts a worn look. Do you want your shorts to look like you've been wearing them for years? Sandpaper or a cheese grater will help you "destroy" the shorts.
      • Rub the seams around the pockets of your shorts or on the sides for an old-fashioned effect.
      • Rub the seams around the edges of the shorts to create a worn (but not quite old) look.
    3. 3 Punch holes in your shorts. Use scissors to cut the front of the jeans.
      • Change the look of your jeans the way you want. Make a lot of cuts, or just a few, make cuts at an angle or parallel.
      • Use scissors to make small holes in the shorts. Expand them gently with your fingers. The next time you wash them, the holes will have a fringed edge.
    4. 4 Lighten your shorts. Use whiteness to make the shorts completely white or to lighten only part of them.
      • Combine whiteness water in a one-to-one ratio in a plastic bowl.
      • Place the jeans in a dry bath and sprinkle the resulting liquid on them.
      • With whiteness, you can make lightened "patterns" on the shorts. If you like, you can sprinkle the whiteness on different areas to create several different "patterns". You can experiment.
      • Once you're satisfied with the color, rinse your jeans under cold water and then machine wash them without powder.
      • Use rubber bands to enhance the acidizing effect. No big deal - gather your jeans and tie them with an elastic band.Put them in a bowl filled with a two-to-one ratio of water and whiteness. Leave them there for 20-60 minutes, depending on the desired color, then rinse with running water. Then wash them without adding powder.
