When preparing for a gala dinner or party, the focus is on the food and the event itself. However, table setting also plays an important role. You can decorate the table if you fold the napkins in the form of boats. It is easy to do and takes very little time. In addition, such an exercise is well suited for the first lessons in the art of origami.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Preparing the napkin

  1. 1 Choose the color of the future ship. If you are going to reproduce the appearance of the ship, it is better to use a darker one, such as a brown napkin. However, you can use any color napkins that you have on hand. In addition, you should decide whether you will use double-sided wipes. Better to use a napkin stained on both rather than one side.
    • Paper napkins are great for a friendly birthday party, while cotton and linen napkins can create a more formal atmosphere (they are often used in hotels and restaurants).
  2. 2 Choose a square napkin. A napkin 50x50 centimeters in size is well suited for a boat. Naturally, the larger the napkin, the larger the boat will come out. The napkin should not be too thick, or you will not be able to fold it properly. If you do not have a suitable square napkin, you can use one that is close to a square. A few extra centimeters on one side will even make your job easier.
    • Another option is to trim off the excess and thereby give the napkin a square shape. However, in this case, you need to make sure that you do not have frayed edges at the incision sites. This method is better for simple paper napkins, but it is not suitable for beautiful family napkins, which are used for special occasions.
  3. 3 Place the napkin on a flat surface. First, clean the napkin with a feather duster or glass cleaner to prevent it from getting dirty as you roll it up. Spread the napkin on a table or nightstand. Do not lay the napkin on a soft surface, otherwise it will be difficult for you to fold it.
  4. 4 Smooth the napkin with an iron. This step is best for getting rid of excess wrinkles on the napkin. Only use an iron if you have a cloth. DO NOT use an iron to iron a paper towel. Set the iron to a low temperature and gently smooth the napkin with it. Then turn the napkin over and do the same on the other side.
  5. 5 Decide what type of boat you will be making. You can make three types of boats: a boat with an unfolded sail (high), a stable boat (flat) and a party boat (high). A boat with an unfolded sail is more suitable for formal occasions such as a business banquet. Flat figures can be used for any occasion, but they are usually also used for formal meetings. The party boat is more suitable for informal celebrations and parties. Think about what type of figurine is best for your occasion.

Method 2 of 4: Sailing Boat

  1. 1 Grasp the top edge of the napkin and fold it in half. Place a square napkin in front of you. Fully unfold and spread the napkin before folding the figurine. Then fold the napkin in half and smooth the fold properly. A tight fold will leave you more material to follow.
  2. 2 Fold down the top right corner. At the same time, make sure that the free edges of the napkin are directed towards you. Bend the corner so that its edge is 2-3 centimeters higher than the bottom edge of the napkin. As a result, you should have a right angle. Smooth down the fold so that it is sharp enough.
  3. 3 Grasp the bottom right corner of the napkin and fold it all the way to the left. Make sure the bottom of the right edge matches the bottom of the left, bottom half. Smooth down the fold to create an even fold.
  4. 4 Fold down the top left corner. Pull this corner from left to right. Make sure you have straight and smooth edges. Smooth the crease with your hand. If it comes out too thick, iron it with something heavy, such as a paperweight. If you prefer a boat with a smoother outline, you don't have to smooth out this fold. As a result, at the bottom left, you will get a protruding edge 1-3 centimeters wide.
  5. 5 Fold the left edge up. Fold up a strip at least 5 centimeters wide. This will be the side of your ship. If you want to make the bead taller, fold the wider strip and vice versa.
  6. 6 Separate the bottom folds. The napkin will have two long folds that separate the raised strips about 5 centimeters long from the main body. These stripes represent the "side" of the ship, and the main part of the napkin is its "sail". With your thumb, bend one strip up and the other down. Align the edges and place the napkin upright. So, you have a ship with an unfolded sail.

Method 3 of 4: Flat and Stable Boat

  1. 1 Grasp the top left corner of the napkin. Place a square napkin in front of you with one side facing you.Fold the top-left corner downward so that the edge lines up with the edge of the bottom-right corner. Smooth down the crease with your hand or a heavy object such as a paperweight. Then unfold the napkin so that the fold is at the bottom.
  2. 2 Fold down the left side. Grasp the left corner and fold it down. In this case, the straight edge of the corner should lie in the middle of the napkin. Note: Bend the corner not from left to right, but from top to bottom. Bend it until the top of the corner is 2-3 centimeters from the opposite corner of the napkin. Smooth the crease with your hand.
  3. 3 Fold down the right side. Take the right corner of the napkin and fold it down. In this case, the straight side of the corner should be in the middle of the napkin. As a result, you will have two edges that lie in the middle and almost touch each other. Smooth the crease with your hand or paperweight.
  4. 4 Raise the bottom left lapel. Take the bottom edge of the left flap and pull it up. Drag it until its top is aligned with the top edge. Then do the same for the bottom edge of the right cuff. Also lift it up and align with the top. Smooth down both folds with your hand or a heavy object.
  5. 5 Fold the bottom edge up. As a result, you get the "side" of the sailboat. Pull up the bottom edge to a level that suits you, depending on how you want the ratio between the side and sail dimensions. Then place the napkin on a plate.

Method 4 of 4: Party Boat

  1. 1 Cut the napkin into the shape you want. For this method, you need not a square, but a rectangular napkin. If you already have a rectangular napkin, use it. If you have a square napkin, take it by the left edge and fold it towards the center so that it lines up with the middle. Then take the right edge and fold it over to line up with the middle as well. Smooth the resulting folds with your hand.
    • Then unfold the napkin. You will have 4 sections. Cut out one of the outermost rectangular sections to fold the boat out of it.
  2. 2 Fold down the top edge of the napkin. Position the napkin so that the short sides of the rectangle are at the top and bottom. Fold the napkin in half so that the top edge matches the bottom. Smooth the crease with your hand or a small, heavy object such as a paperweight.
  3. 3 Fold down the top two corners. You can do this both simultaneously and sequentially. Fold the top corners towards the middle so that the edges meet. Make sure the tops of the corners are flush. After that, smooth the folds with your hand or paperweight.
  4. 4 Lift the bottom edge up. After the previous step, there will be two layers at the bottom of the napkin. Grasp the bottom edge of the top layer and pull it up so that it covers about half of the top triangle. Then flip the napkin over to the other side and fold the second bottom edge in the same way. Smooth the folds with your hand or a heavy object.
  5. 5 Bend the corners inward. After you fold the bottom edges up, you will have raised corners along the sides of the triangle, two on each side, for a total of four. Fold each of these corners inward. When you've done this with all four corners, place the napkin back on the table. Press the corners inward firmly so that the edges line up with each other. This will create a triangle-like shape.
  6. 6 Expand the triangle. Once you have a triangle, grab the sharp corners and bring them together. While doing this, press down on the center of the napkin. Smooth the folds at the new edges with your hand or a heavy object. This will create a diamond shape.
  7. 7 Grab the bottom corner of the diamond. This is not a flat corner, but one with two folds. Bend one of these corners upward until you have a triangle. Rotate the diamond 180 degrees and repeat with the second corner. As a result, you will have a figure that looks like a cocked hat.
  8. 8 Expand the triangle. Just as you did before, unfold the triangle and bring the two sharp corners together. At the same time, straighten the rest of the napkin. As a result, you will have a diamond shape again.
  9. 9 Draw out the top corners of the diamond. Open these corners slowly. Secure them with tape so that the boat is stable. You now have a party boat. You can put it on the table in this form, put some chips in it, or put a candle on an open area.

Tips

  • Use a paperweight or other small, heavy object to smooth out creases. This will give you smoother, tighter folds.
  • Experiment with color and material. You can use bright colors such as hot pink or toxic green. You can also fold boats not from napkins, but from paper.

Warnings

  • Be careful with sharp edges if you are using stiff paper.
  • Be careful when using scissors. Put them in a safe place after use.

What do you need

  • Napkins
