This article will show you how to reset your Vizio TV remote control by turning off the power or resetting the memory. In some cases, in order to solve the problem and refuse the need to reset, it is enough to simply fix the malfunction in the remote control.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Turning off and on the remote

1. 1 Remove the batteries from the remote control. They can usually be found on the bottom or back of the console.
2. 2 Press the power button on the front of the remote.
3. 3 Release the button after five seconds to permanently de-energize the console.
4. 4 Press each button on the remote at least once to release the stuck buttons.
5. 5 Replace the batteries in the remote control. If you changed the batteries not too long ago, just return them to the remote.
6. 6 Try pressing buttons on the remote. If the remote didn't work due to a firmware update or too much use, it should work now.
   • If that doesn't work, try turning the power off and on on your TV. To do this, unplug the TV from the outlet, hold down the power button on the TV for five seconds, plug it back into the outlet and turn on the TV.

Part 2 of 3: Resetting the remote's memory

1. 1 Hold the button EXIT or SETUP. It can usually be found in the upper left corner on the face of the remote control.
   • This method is only suitable for universal remote controls.
   • After you erase the memory on the remote, you will have to reprogram it to suit different devices (like a DVD player), as these connections will be cleared as well.
2. 2 When the LED blinks twice, release the button SETUP. The LED on the Vizio universal remote is located on the front side at the very top.
3. 3 Click on 9 8 1. This is the reset code for most Vizio universal remotes.
   • If the code 9 8 1 did not fit, enter 9 7 7.
   • The reset code for the remote can be found in the instructions for the device.
4. 4 Wait for the LED to blink twice. When this happens, the memory on the Vizio universal remote will be successfully erased. This should solve the problems with the firmware too.

Part 3 of 3: Troubleshoot connection problems

1. 1 Remove objects in front of the TV sensor. Even transparent objects can interfere with the infrared signal from the remote control.
   • These items also include the plastic screen protector on new TVs.
   • The infrared sensor is usually located on the front of the TV, in the lower right or lower left corner.
2. 2 Make sure the remote has new batteries. It's easy to forget at times that the batteries in your remote control should be replaced. If you want the remote to work properly, make sure it always has charged batteries.
   • You should also go for quality batteries (like Duracell or Energizer).
3. 3 Get another remote for your TV. If the TV responds to commands from another Vizio remote, then you should replace or update the current remote.
   • If the allegedly faulty remote control works on another TV, then the problem is not with it.
4. 4 Call customer support. If your remote just doesn't work, you may be able to get a new one for free.
   • If you don't want to wait, buy a new remote control in the store, in the tech department.
