Building a model ship takes time and patience. A model can contain hundreds of small parts and must be assembled by hand. The assembly process can be similar to how real ships were built. Try these steps to build your ship model.

Steps

1. 1 Collect information about your ship. This will help you determine how it should be structurally and visually. If possible, find blueprints for your ship, they will help you reproduce individual parts.
2. 2 Buy a kit or make parts of your vehicle model. Parts needed to build a ship may include deck and hull planks, heavy canvas sails, and 1 or more masts.
3. 3 Insert the frames into the finned hull frame or keel. Frames are elements of a ship that help increase the strength of its structure.
4. 4 Soak the wood planks intended for the cabinet in water. This will make them more flexible. Bend the wet planks around the frames to match the shape of the hull structure.
5. 5 Glue all curved wood planks to each of the ship's frames.
6. 6 Cut the boards to fit the gaps between the body sections. Where necessary, glue these boards to the body.
7. 7 Attach another layer of wood planks to finish with the body assembly.
8. 8 Sand the body with sandpaper. To protect the wood, apply several coats of clear coat or varnish.
9. 9 If necessary, cut loopholes in the sides of the hull for the guns. Check your research or ship blueprints for the information you need. For consistently accurate cuts, use a laser cutter connected to your computer.
10. 10 Lay out and glue the ship deck boards.
11. 11 Paint the hull of your model ship in a historically correct color.
12. 12 Add small details and other details to your boat or ship model. This can be a stern thread, a ship's rudder and cannons.
13. 13 Color in the rest of the ship.
14. 14 Attach a ship's mast or masts, rigging and sails. Use rope of different thicknesses and tie small knots on them if necessary.

Tips

• To make a ship in a bottle, a flexible mast ship model is built outside of it. The ship is pushed into the bottle when its mast is bent. When the ship is in place, the mast is pulled by the thread tied to it and the sails open inside the bottle.
• As you build your model, test the ship at the end of each step. This will help you find and fix errors right away.
• The process of adding the planks to the hull one at a time is called the typesetting sheathing option.
• Rigging ropes should appear taut, and the masts of the finished ship should be resiliently fastened.
