This article describes how to properly restart your home network. Do this when your internet is down before calling technical support. You may need to print this page if your internet connection disappears / when you turn off your computer

Steps

  1. 1 Turn off your computer.
  2. 2 Disconnect power to the modem. This is a box from a cable or DSL provider.
  3. 3 Disconnect the power to your VOIP phone adapter. If you don't have one, skip this step.
  4. 4 Power off the router.
  5. 5 Wait 45 seconds.
  6. 6 Plug in your modem and wait for the blinking indicators to stabilize on a specific panel. (It usually takes about 1 minute)
  7. 7 Plug in your router and wait until the lights stabilize or the router starts up. (It usually takes about 30 seconds)
  8. 8 Plug in your VOIP phone adapter (if you have a VOIP service) and wait until the phone rings again. If you don't have VOIP or know what VOIP is, skip this step.
  9. 9 Start your computer.
  10. 10 You have completed your food cycle and your Internet should be up and running.

Tips

  • Check all cables and wires and make sure they are protected and safe.
  • If you need to call tech support, be a positive person, talk to the agent as if you are his best friend, tell a joke, or try to find common topics of conversation (i.e. location, weather, sports). They will go the extra mile to help solve your problem.
  • If you cannot go online, check if your modem has an Internet Off / On button or a Standby button. If so, try pressing this button and see if the indicator signals change.
  • Become familiar with the indicator panel on your modem and all network devices. If you know that an indicator is not working properly, technical support can use this knowledge to determine the cause of the Internet connection problem. Write down information about the operation of the device, if you do not know the normal operating modes.

Warnings

  • If you need to call tech support, don't yell at the agent. They work for the company and try to help you. They are your friends and your nervous excitement will diminish their interest in helping and may slow down the decision on your connection problem.
