Through this article, you will learn how to identify and understand the model numbers of iPad tablets, as well as check the software version.

Part 1 of 2: Model Number

1. 1 Varieties of one model. Each iPad model comes in several flavors. This is usually a “Wi-Fi only” version, as well as a Wi-Fi and cellular version. For this reason, one model of iPad tablet (for example, iPad Mini) can have several varieties and numbers.
   • The version of the iPad model (according to the number) does not affect the dimensions of the device (for example, the iPad Air with cellular networks does not differ in size from the “Wi-Fi only” version of the iPad Air).
2. 2 Remove the case from the tablet. The model number is located on the bottom of the back of the iPad case, so remove the case or trim.
3. 3 Find your model number. There are several lines of text at the bottom of the back of the iPad case. The model number is located on the right side of the top line after the word "Model".
   • The model number has the format A1234.
4. 4 Match the model number of your iPad with the model name. As of April 2017, all current iPad models are assigned the following numbers:
   • iPad Pro 9.7-inch - A1673 (only Wi-Fi); A1674 or A1675 (Wi-Fi and cellular networks).
   • iPad Pro 12.9-inch - A1584 (only Wi-Fi); A1652 (Wi-Fi and cellular networks).
   • iPad Air 2 - A1566 (only Wi-Fi); A1567 (Wi-Fi and cellular networks).
   • iPad Air - A1474 (only Wi-Fi); A1475 (Wi-Fi and shared cellular networks); A1476 (Wi-Fi and TD / LTE networks).
   • iPad mini 4 - A1538 (only Wi-Fi); A1550 (Wi-Fi and cellular networks).
   • iPad mini 3 - A1599 (only Wi-Fi); A1600 (Wi-Fi and cellular networks).
   • iPad mini 2 - A1489 (only Wi-Fi); A1490 (Wi-Fi and shared cellular networks); A1491 (Wi-Fi and TD / LTE networks).
   • iPad mini - A1432 (only Wi-Fi); A1454 (Wi-Fi and shared cellular networks); A1455 (Wi-Fi and MM networks).
   • iPad 5th generation - A1822 (only Wi-Fi); A1823 (Wi-Fi and cellular networks).
   • 4th generation iPad - A1458 (only Wi-Fi); A1459 (Wi-Fi and shared cellular networks); A1460 (Wi-Fi and MM networks).
   • 3rd generation iPad - A1416 (only Wi-Fi); A1430 (Wi-Fi and shared cellular networks); A1403 (Wi-Fi and VZ networks).
   • 2nd generation iPad - A1395 (only Wi-Fi); A1396 (GSM networks); A1397 (CDMA networks).
   • first generation iPad - A1219 (only Wi-Fi); A1337 (Wi-Fi and 3G networks).
5. 5 Use your iPad model number when choosing accessories. For example, if you want to buy a special charger or case for your iPad, you can use the model number to determine the size and type of accessory you need.

Part 2 of 2: Software version

1. 1 Launch the Settings app. Look for a gray gear icon on one of your tablet's home screens.
2. 2 Click General. This tab is on the left side of the settings page.
3. 3 Click About This Device. This item is at the top of the list on the General page.
4. 4 Find the line "Version". The number to the right of the Version symbol on the Basic Information page is the iPad software version (for example, 10.3.1). The software version number affects the look and feel of your tablet's programs and desktops.

Tips

• The model number of an iPhone can be identified in the same way as the model number of an iPad.
