Permanent resident status, that is, having a green card, is not permanent. Just like a driver's license, a green card needs to be renewed periodically. Typically, green cards are valid for 10 years. Read on to find out what you need to do to update your map if you are a permanent resident of the United States.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Paperwork

  1. 1 Begin the renewal process six months before your green card expires. It is difficult to say how long it will take to update the map. It happens that the process lasts for months. This rarely happens, but it's still worth starting the upgrade early.
    • You should renew your green card if it has been stolen from you (in this case, you should contact the emergency department), you have lost it, it has deteriorated, your data has changed, you are 14 years old or you received commuter status.
  2. 2 Complete USCIS Form I-90. You can find this form on the United States Citizenship and Immigration services website. Otherwise, you can fill it out on paper. You must fill out this form completely, otherwise the update process will not start.
    • Form I-90 can be completed electronically (you can pay immediately) or you can order it via mail. To receive your form by mail, call 1-800-870-3676.
    • You may or may not have the right to send them the form electronically. For more information, take a look at their website.
  3. 3 Pay the renewal fee. At the moment, the amount of the fee is $ 450.00, but it is subject to change. The price includes biometrics tax, a beautiful word that means that you will be photographed, fingerprinted and electronically signed. You must include payment when filling out the form electronically, or when submitting the form by mail. They accept American Express, Mastercard, Visa, and Discover.
    • If you fill out the form on paper, send it and payment of the fee to the address:
      • USCIS
        Attention: I-90
        1820 Skyharbor, Circle S Floor 1
        Phoenix, AZ 85034
      • Pay tax through a bank or by a written check. Payment must be made in US dollars to the address of the US Department of Homeland Security. Do not use the initials DHS or USDHS or USCIS when writing a check, and do not send cash or a traveler's check.
    • As soon as they receive payment, a check will be sent to you. The check will contain the address to which you sent the documents. If you need to do biometrics, you will be sent a notice of the date and place of your appointment.

Method 2 of 2: After submitting the form

  1. 1 Wait until you receive a notification or check from USCIS. It will be sent to you either by e-mail (if you have filled out the electronic form) or by regular mail. Save your receipt and notice as proof of your new card.
    • USCIS will send you Form I-797C or a Notice of Claim. This notice is proof that you have submitted the form. This notice has all the information required for future admission.
  2. 2 Go to a biometric appointment. Take your appointment notice with you. During biometrics, you will be photographed and fingerprinted. Do not be afraid of this process, unless of course you have a fresh criminal record.
    • If you need an identity document while USCIS is updating your status, please tell your appointment. They will stamp your passport that you have sent documents to a new card. With this stamp, you will be able to travel to and from the United States.
  3. 3 Check again the list sent to you by the US Immigration Service and collect all the required documents. Wait until you receive a notification about another appointment. If there is no notification, then the next step is to receive a new green card.
    • You may need to go for an interview at the regional office. It is possible that you will not need to go to another appointment and you will receive your card in the mail.

Tips

  • Always check all your documents so that you don't run into problems during the entire procedure.
  • If you want to become a US citizen, apply for citizenship. Once you become a US citizen, you don't need to worry about renewing your green card. If you've submitted your citizenship application, it's okay if your green card has run out.
  • If you want to change your address, you can do it online.

Warnings

  • It is likely that you will have to start the whole process all over again if your card runs out. You will have to pay all due duties again.
  • The procedure for renewing the card for conditional citizens who have a card for two years is different from the above. You will need to withdraw all conditions 90 days before the end of the card. This can be done over the network.
