A menstrual cup is a silicone, latex, or thermoplastic elastomer cup that collects menstrual blood. The bowl collects blood, rather than absorbing it like a swab. There are many different brands of menstrual cups, so it's important to research the features of each cup to choose the one that's right for you.

Steps

  1. 1 Learn more about menstrual cups. If you grew up in a society where menstrual cups are not used, they may seem very strange to you. However, bowls are healthier, cheaper, and more convenient to use than traditional feminine hygiene products. Check out our article on menstrual cups to learn more about them.
  2. 2 Measure the distance to your cervix to find out which cup size you need. The cervix is where menstrual blood comes out. It is important to know how far away the cervix is in order to know which cup you need as there are longer and shorter cups. If your cervix is low, you will need a shorter cup. It will not slide out and peep out during use. Before buying a cup, determine how high or low your cervix is located in the following way:
    • Wait for your period as your cervix may be in different places at different times in your cycle. You can also measure the distance several times on different days, as the cervix will move.
    • Slowly and carefully, insert your clean finger toward the back of your vagina, not up. Walk along the pelvic bone, past the muscles, and reach the empty space. Use lubricant as needed.
    • Look for an appendage that feels like the tip of a nose. The cervix looks like a slight thickening with a notch in the middle.
    • Pay attention to how far the finger has entered before it touches the cervix. Use a ruler to measure the distance on your finger to know the length in centimeters or millimeters. If you are unable to reach the cervix, consider that it is a little more than a finger's length from the entrance to the vagina.

    • Now figure out what to do with this information. Some brands have small bowls no more than 4 centimeters long and large bowls about 6 centimeters long. The bowl should be under the cervix.If the neck is low, you will need a short cup (Ladycup, Lunette, Fleurcup, Yuuki). If your period is not very heavy, the MeLuna brand is suitable for you, but if the bleeding is heavy and you want to use a cup from this brand, you will have to choose a larger cup. If your cervix is low, the cup itself, excluding the tail, should not be much longer than the distance from the cervix to the opening of the vagina (but you have a margin, since the cervix may be partially submerged in the cup). If the cervix is high, the longer Divacup, Naturcup, Shecup brands will suit you as it will be easier for you to reach them. However, in this case, almost all other bowls will also work for you.
  3. 3 Consider the profusion of bleeding when choosing the volume of the bowl. Some bowls hold only 11 milliliters, others up to 29 milliliters. On a typical menstrual day, pay attention to how many tampons you need and how often you change them. Then calculate the volume of blood discharged in 12 hours using the data below. This will determine what capacity the bowl should have. Better to overestimate than underestimate abundance. Panty liners will absorb between 100 and 500 milliliters, however, you should not wear a panty liner when it is full, as it will leak. If you use pads, it will be difficult for you to calculate the volume of blood accurately, so be guided by the following data: a bowl for non-heavy bleeding will hold 10-16 milliliters, for medium bleeds - 17-22 milliliters, for copious ones - 23-29 milliliters. Tampons absorb:
    • regular: 6-9 milliliters;
    • super: 9-12 milliliters;
    • super plus: 12-15 milliliters;
    • ultra: 15-18 milliliters.

  4. 4 Consider the appearance of the bowl. The bowls come in a variety of colors. They can be smooth and rough, or have rings that you can grasp with your fingers. Ponytails can be hollow, flat, cylindrical. Some have a ball-shaped hook instead of a tail. The appearance depends on the manufacturer, and this is another factor that needs to be considered when choosing.
  5. 5 Choose a bowl brand. When deciding on the length and capacity of your menstrual cup, study the dimensions below. Bowls are produced in different sizes, and although you can get used to almost any bowl, it is better to take into account all the peculiarities of your body to make it more comfortable to wear the bowl.
  6. 6 Buy a menstrual cup online or at a store. Many bowls are sold online with home delivery. Look at the manufacturer's website to see if he has stores in your city. For example, in the US, conventional stores sell cups of the USA, Lunette, DivaCup and Keeper brands, in the UK - Femmecups, DivaCups, UK Mooncups. Bowls of the brands LilaCup, Femmecup, Meluna, CupLee are sold in Russia. There is a world map of menstrual cup shops. Use it to find out if there is a shop in your city where you can buy a bowl.

Tips

  • If you want to keep track of how much blood you lose during your period, buy a cup with milliliter marks.
  • Bowls sold on eBay are often listed under the wrong brand names. Most of them are just repackaged Green Donna bowls (copies of Lunette). Compare the photo of what you are buying with other photos of the product on the Internet before buying.
  • Hollow ponytails are harder to clean than regular ponytails. The surface with the letters will also be more difficult to clean compared to the smooth inner surface. Menstrual blood may clog in the areas around the letters.
  • If you feel the ponytail and are uncomfortable, cut off part or all of the ponytail. Treat the edge so that it does not prick, but remember that in this case you will have to grasp the bowl with your fingers to reach it.
  • The hard cup is easier to reach, but you may feel it inside you. Of course, it also depends on your sensitivity and body characteristics.
  • If you use the short cup when the cervix is high, the cup may "get lost" in the vagina. Do not panic. Take a bath and relax your muscles before removing the bowl. You can also squat down as this will shorten the vaginal canal.
  • Smooth bowls may slip out of hand when removed. However, this problem can be solved by wiping your hands with toilet paper.

Warnings

  • Some women refuse to use Keeper cups because the brand is known for its unethical business practices. The Keeper Inc. owns the Moon Cup brand, although this name was originally used by the UK Mooncup brand, including in the American market. The UK Mooncup got around this limitation by introducing the MCUK brand to the US market.
  • If you are a virgin and have heavy periods, you may find it uncomfortable to use large, wide cups. Look for a bowl that is large, but smaller.
  • If you are allergic to latex, Keeper bowls are not suitable for you as they are made from natural unfilled rubber (latex).If you are allergic to anything else (dust, pollen, food), you may develop a latex allergy due to Keeper bowls. (This brand's Moon Cups (in the US market) are made of silicone and have the same shape.)
  • If you are not buying products that contain BPA, buy a silicone cup. Silicone usually does not contain this substance.
