This article guides you to access and control your computer from another computer by installing remote control software on both computers. After both computers have the program installed, you can set one computer as the "server" so that it can be controlled from anywhere, as long as both computers have an internet connection, be powered on and have the appropriate software installed. Programs like TeamViewer and Chrome Remote Desktop can be installed on both Windows and Mac computers; Windows Remote Desktop only works on Windows host computers (using Windows 10 Professional operating system) and is accessed by other Windows or Mac computers.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Use the Chrome Remote Desktop program

   • On a Mac, you'll first click New (+ New) in the upper left corner of the application window, then enter your computer's name in the "PC Name" field.
   • You can also enter the host computer's IP address in the computer name field.

   Click Connect (Connect). This is the option at the bottom of the Remote Desktop window. Once connected, the host computer's screen will appear in your computer's window.
   • On the Mac, you'll double-click the name of the newly created connection in the drop-down list My Desktops (My monitor).

Advice

• Consider disabling the host computer's "Sleep" or "Hibernate" time limit, since you cannot connect to the computer that is in this mode.
• If you don't have a password on your Windows computer when you want to use Remote Desktop, you need to create one before you can use Remote Desktop.

Warning

• The computer you want to access remotely must be powered on in order for another computer to connect.
