This article will guide you how to find the full path of a file using Windows search tool (Windows search), File Explorer application or the Run command dialog box.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Use Windows search

1. 

   Press ⊞ Win+S to open the search bar.

   Enter a file name. A list of matching results will be displayed.

3. 

   Right click on the filename. A brief pop-up message panel will display.

   Click Open file location (Open file location). This will open the file in the folder.

5. 

   Click at the bottom of the box containing the filename. This box is just above the list of files in the folder and below the folder icon. This will highlight the full path to the file.
   • To copy (copy) the path, press Ctrl+C.
   • To paste the path after copying, press Ctrl+V.

Method 2 of 3: Use File Explorer

1. 

   
   
   Press ⊞ Win+E to open Windows File Explorer.
   • The Windows (windows) button is usually near the bottom left corner of the keyboard.

   Navigate to the folder containing the file. The steps to do this will vary depending on the location of the file. You usually have to double-click on the name or letter that represents the drive, then double-click a folder to see the contents.

   Right click on the file. A menu will appear.

4. 

   Click an option Properties at the end of the menu.

5. 

   Find the path next to “Location”. This path is located near the center of the window.
   • To copy, right-click a link to highlight it, then press Ctrl+C.
   • To paste the path after copying, press Ctrl+V.

Method 3 of 3: Use the Run Command dialog box

1. 

   Navigate to the folder containing the file. For example, if the file is on the desktop (main screen), navigate to the desktop.

2. 

   Press ⊞ Win+R to open the Run command dialog box.

3. 

   Drag the file into the Run command dialog box. You can release the mouse button when the file's icon is in the Run dialog box.

4. 

   Find the full path in the “Open” box. This box displays the full path to the file.
   • To copy, double-click the link to highlight it, then press Ctrl+C.
   • To paste the path after copying, press Ctrl+V.
