Is your computer running an outdated version of Word and cannot open the file with the.docx extension? This format is in Word 2007, so some older versions will not be able to open files of this format. Fortunately, converting the formats of these documents is relatively easy. Here are step-by-step instructions for converting Word format from.DOCX to.DOC.

Method 1 of 4: Install the Compatibility Pack Upgrade Pack for Office XP and 2003 operating systems

1. 

   Get the upgrade package from Microsoft. The upgrade package will help older versions of Word download files with the .docx extension.To get this package, visit the Office section of the Microsoft Download Center. This upgrade pack is usually downloaded by many people.
   • This package will be free to download, but note should only be downloaded from the Microsoft website.

   Run the setup file. After downloading the upgrade package, start the FileFormatConverters.exe file. This will update your Office installation on your machine, allowing you to open the.docx file.

   Open the file. Once the upgrade package is installed, you should be able to open the.docx file like any other documentation. Double-click the file to open, or right-click and choose "open" to open the file in Word. advertisement

Method 2 of 4: Use a converter

   Download a converter or use an online converter. There are many programs and tools out there that allow you to easily convert your file format to the standard .DOC format. Some popular online file format conversion tools include:
   • Zamzar
   • Investintech
   • Free file conversion

   Upload your file to the conversion website. Online converting sites require you to upload your file to convert. Most of these websites have very good privacy policy settings, but if you are concerned about security then do not use this method.

   Download the converted file to your device. It may take a while for your file to convert. Depending on the conversion site, your file may be emailed, or provide you with a link (link) to download directly from the website. If you are using a conversion program, the files will be saved to the folder you specified to save the converted documents. advertisement

Method 3 of 4: Use Google Drive

1. 

   Open Google Drive. Google Drive will convert your document to Google format, which will allow you to open that document. You can then download it as another format, or edit it directly on Drive. But you must have a Google account and it's free.

   Upload your file to Google Drive. Click the red Upload button, located next to the Create button in the upper left corner of the page. The Upload button looks like an arrow pointing upwards and a horizontal line below.
   • A file browser will open and allow you to search for files on your computer.

   Convert. Once the file has been selected, a window will appear asking you to set up the upload settings. Note, don't forget to check the "Convert documents ..." box because this will convert your.docx files to Google Docs format, and allow you to edit your documents. I'm in Drive.
   • If you don't choose to convert the files, you can still view the document in Drive but not edit it.

   Open the file. Your file will be added to the My Drive folder, which you can access from the menu at the top left of the Drive page. Click on the file to open it in Drive view or edit, depending on whether you choose to convert or not.

   Check the converted file. During the conversion process, your files may jump over to other commonly used formats, so you have to check if the file is converted to the format you want.

   Download the converted file as you would any other format. You can download the file to your computer in similar formats, such as .PDF or .RTF. Click File → Dowload As → and select the format you want. That way, the file will be downloaded to your computer like any other file.
   • Any pre-installed formatting such as right-to-left text formatting and other font formats will be virtually unchanged.

Method 4 of 4: Use ONLYOFFICE

1. 

   Open ONLYOFFICE.. This is a free and you can sign up via social networks / email.

2. 

   Upload the .docx file from your computer to the website by clicking "Upload" in the upper left corner next to the "Create" button. ONLYOFFICE can run.docx format directly, so you don't need to do any extra conversion.
   • A file browser will appear, allowing you to search for the file on your computer.

   Open the file. Your file will be saved to the My Documents folder, go to the left menu on your personal ONLYOFFICE page to open My Documents. Click on the file to edit to open it in a new window.

4. 

   Document editing. ONLYOFFICE has a very similar interface to Microsoft Office, so it will be very convenient for those who are familiar with Microsoft.

5. 

   Any changes you make in the document are automatically saved.

   Download files to your computer in any of the formats: PDF, TXT, DOCX, ODT, HTML. Click the "File" icon located on the left menu and select "Download as". The file will be downloaded to your computer just like any other file. advertisement
