This wikiHow teaches you how to download and install the Tor browser on a Linux computer.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Downloading the Tor package

1. 

   Terminal. Click on the Terminal app with a black frame icon and white text inside. The Terminal icon is usually located in the Dock bar or the Desktop.
   • Some versions of Linux will ask you to open Menu and choose Terminal from the application list.
   • You can also press Alt+Ctrl+T to open a Terminal window.

   Switch to the Downloads folder. Enter an order cd Downloads then press ↵ Enter. This will bring the Terminal to the Downloads folder where you downloaded the Tor installation file.
   • If you downloaded the Tor installation file to a different directory, you will need to change it to that directory.

   Extract the Tor installation file contents. Import tar -xvJf tor-browser-linux64-7.5.2_language-region.tar.xzDon't forget to change the language of the file (for example: en-US) into the section language-region, then press ↵ Enter.
   • For example, to extract the U.S. part. Tor English, you need to enter tar -xvJf tor-browser-linux64-7.5.2_en-US.tar.xz then press ↵ Enter.

   Open the Tor browser directory. Enter an order cd tor-browser_language, Inside language is the language tag for the Tor version you selected, then click ↵ Enter.

   Launch the Tor installation file. Enter an order ./start-tor-browser.desktop then press ↵ Enter, then wait for the Tor installation window to open.

   Click Connect (Connect). This button is in the lower left of the window. You will begin connecting to the Tor network, and once successfully connected, the Tor browser will open. You can now use Tor to browse the web. advertisement

Advice

• Contrary to popular belief, in fact, Tor itself is not dangerous or illegal, the browser is based on earlier versions of Firefox.
• While most applications are installed by command sudo apt-get install Tor is a mobile browser that can be installed anywhere. That means Tor files require flexibility, not traditional install files.

Warning

• Tor is often used to access the dark web (Internet content that regular search engines do not list). You should not use Tor for this purpose as it is often unsafe and can be illegal in your local area.
• Here are a few items to keep in mind when you use Tor:
  • Tor does not anonymize all Internet traffic the first time it is installed. The only traffic that Tor anonymizes is Firefox. Other applications must have a proxy server configured first before they can use the Tor Network.
  • The Tor button in Firefox blocks potentially identity-leaking technologies such as Java, ActiveX, RealPlayer, QuickTime and Adobe. In order to use Tor with these applications, the installation file needs to be reconfigured.
  • Cookies that existed before Tor was installed can still provide users with identity. To ensure complete anonymity of the user, please delete all cookies prior to installing Tor.
  • The Tor Network encrypts all data until it exits the network's router. To completely protect your users data, you need to use HTTPS protocol or other reliable encryption.
• Don't forget to verify the integrity of the apps downloaded from Tor. These applications can be potentially risky if the Tor router crashes.
