This article teaches you how to use a fake phone number to log in to WhatsApp. You can get the fake phone number through Google Voice, a free anonymous calling and texting service. Unfortunately, you do have to use a real phone number - yours or someone else's - to sign up for Google Voice. So you will need at least temporary access to a real phone number to create your Google Voice account, so that you can then log in to WhatsApp without a number.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Sign in to Google Voice

  1. Open Google Voice. Go to https://voice.google.com/ in your computer's web browser. If you are signed in to a Google account, you will now see the Google Voice configuration page.
    • If you are not logged in yet, please enter your email address and password first.
    • Skip this step if you already have a Google Voice account.
  2. Search for a location. Click on the text box in the middle of the page and enter a city or area. As you type, several options appear below the text box.
  3. Select a location. Click on a city in the drop-down menu to set it as the location for your Google Voice number.
  4. Write down your preferred number. You will now see different telephone numbers. Write down the ones you want to use. You will use this number later to log in to WhatsApp.
  5. click on Selecting. This is a blue button to the right of the phone number you want to use.
  6. click on Next one in the dialog box. You will now be taken to the page where you can enter your telephone number.
  7. Enter your real phone number. In the text field, enter a phone number that you have access to.
  8. click on Send code. This button is located in the lower right corner of the phone number window. Google Voice will now send a confirmation SMS to your phone.
  9. Find your code. Open your phone's text messaging app, find the message from Google (usually from a five-digit phone number), and view the six-digit code in the message.
    • The message will be something like "123456 is your confirmation code for Google Voice."
  10. Enter the code. Enter the six characters of the code in the text field in the center of the Google Voice page.
  11. click on Verify. It's in the bottom right corner of the verification window.
  12. click on Claims in the dialog box. You now confirm that you want to use this phone number with your Google Voice account.
    • Depending on your phone number, you may not see this option. In that case, you can just proceed to the next step.
  13. click on Complete in the dialog box.
  14. Open the Google Voice page. If you are not automatically redirected to the dashboard, click Google Voice in the top left corner of the page.
  15. Click on the Messages icon. This is a speech bubble logo in the top left corner of the dashboard. You will now open your message history, where you will later receive the WhatsApp confirmation code.
    • Leave this window open for now.

Part 2 of 2: Setting up WhatsApp

  1. Uninstall WhatsApp and then reinstall it. If you already have WhatsApp on your phone, you will need to uninstall and then reinstall the app to erase all user data.
    • If you haven't downloaded WhatsApp yet, do it now on your iPhone or Android.
  2. Open WhatsApp. Tap the WhatsApp icon. This looks like a white speech bubble and phone hook on a green background.
  3. Tap on Agree & continue. This is at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Enter your Google Voice phone number. Tap the text box in the center of the screen and enter the phone number you chose in Google Voice.
    • If you haven't written down your Voice number, you can find it by opening your Google Voice dashboard, clicking in the top left corner of the window, clicking Settings and finally on the tab Phone numbers.
  5. Tap on Ready. It's in the top right corner of the screen.
    • Tap this on Android Next one.
  6. Tap on Yes in the dialog box. You now confirm your phone number, and let WhatsApp send a confirmation text message to this number.
    • Tap this on Android OK.
  7. Wait for a confirmation message. Wait for a text message in your Voice dashboard. When your SMS appears, you'll see it on the left side of the page.
  8. Find your code. Click on the message on the left side of the page, and find the six-character code in the message on the right side of the page.
  9. Enter your code. Enter your confirmation code in the text box. WhatsApp will process the number once you have finished typing.
  10. Tap on Skip restore. This is a red button in the center of the screen.
    • Tap this on Android To skip.
  11. Enter your profile information. Tap the "Your name" text field and enter a name here. You can also add a photo by tapping the circle with Add photo, in the top left corner of the screen. You can then select a photo.
  12. Tap on Ready. It's in the top right corner of the screen. You create your WhatsApp account in this way.
    • Tap this on Android Next one.

Tips

  • You can download the Google Voice app on your phone to use as a second text messaging app.

Warnings

  • If you no longer have access to the phone with which you created your Google Voice account and you need to confirm your Voice account, this will not be possible over the phone.
