This wikiHow teaches you how to tell if someone is online on Facebook Messenger or Chat. Your friends will show as active if they have the Messenger app open on their phone or if they have chat enabled when they view their Facebook page.

Method 1 of 2: Mobile

1. Open Facebook Messenger. When prompted, enter your username and password and tap Log in.
2. Tap People. This is in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.
   • This menu bar is at the top of the screen in Android.
3. Tap Active. All your friends who are active on Messenger will appear in the list.
   • You can also search for a friend by entering text in the bar at the top of the screen. This will search all of your friends on Messenger, but active friends will have a little blue Messenger icon next to their profile picture.
   • If your friend is not using Messenger, he will not appear in the list, even if he is using Facebook at the time.

Method 2 of 2: Web

1. Go to Facebook in your browser. When prompted, enter your username and password and tap Log in.
2. Click on Chat. This is at the bottom right of the page and a small popup window will open.
3. Enter your friend's name in the chat field. Search results appear in the chat box.
4. Check if he has a green circle next to his name. This indicates that he is online and available to chat.
   • Friends can turn off their online status in the chat settings. If they do, you will not be able to tell if they are online.

Tips

• You can check the timestamps on your friends' posts to see when they are active.
• You cannot check someone's online status without using chat or Messenger.
• If your friends are hiding behind privacy settings or aren't using chat, you won't be able to see when they're online.
