Whether you come home and see your child tattooed himself with a waterproof marker, or you accidentally get some ink on your hand while writing, waterproof marker can be difficult to remove. Fortunately, there are some simple tricks to quickly and easily remove or fade ink using household products - just go to Step 1 below to get started.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Using chemical products

  1. Use rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol (aka isopropyl alcohol) is probably the most effective way to remove permanent marker from your skin.
    • Simply dip a cotton ball in the rubbing alcohol and use it to wipe the waterproof ink off your skin.
    • You can buy rubbing alcohol from the pharmacy or drug store - look for a 90% or greater solution.
  2. Try shaving cream. Some people have been able to remove waterproof ink with shaving cream. Shaving cream contains a mixture of oil and soap that can help remove ink from the skin.
    • Rub a generous amount of shaving cream on the ink stain and let it sit for a minute or two. Use a damp washcloth to rub the shaving cream into the skin.
    • Again, you will probably have to repeat the process several times to completely remove the waterproof ink.

Method 3 of 3: Using natural methods

  1. Take a bath. Another natural method of removing waterproof ink is to simply take a bath and let the water fade the ink.
    • You can add a little baking soda or a few drops of tea tree oil to the water if you want to help the process kick in, but regular bubble bath will work fine.
    • Try to keep the skin with the ink stain dipped in the hot water for as long as possible. Use a sponge or loofah sponge to scrub the area.

Tips

  • If you are unable to remove the ink completely, don't worry. Also, don't try these methods if you plan on taking a bath. If the ink stain is not that old yet, you will be able to remove it during your bath by gently rubbing your skin with a loofah sponge or nail brush (the nail brush can hurt you, so rub gently). If the ink doesn't disappear, it will at least fade significantly.
  • Sometimes these tips may not work. Don't worry though. The ink will eventually fade or be removed when you take a bath. If the ink is still wet, you can sometimes rinse it off just like that if you hold the stained area directly under the tap. You may not be able to remove all of the ink, but most of it can.

Warnings

  • Scrubbing too hard can irritate your skin. Your skin may then become dry or a rash may develop. So be careful and don't over-scrub your skin.
  • If you have ink streaks on your skin after surgery, you probably shouldn't get wet around the incisions for some time. It is best to use a different method.
