Adding oil to the care of your hair is helpful in making your hair shinier, moisturizing your scalp and stimulating hair growth. But after applying the oil, it can be difficult to remove. You can usually remove the oil from your hair by simply washing and conditioning your hair, but using a "clarifying" shampoo can be even more effective. There are also many home remedies you can try, such as washing your hair with apple cider vinegar, baking soda, aloe vera, or even eggs to cleanse your hair.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Using shampoo and conditioner

  1. Wash your hair several times with shampoo. Wash your hair with regular shampoo. Really work the shampoo into your scalp with your fingers and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Repeat this process one or two more times, if necessary.
    • After shampooing, add some conditioner to your hair and leave it on for five minutes before rinsing.
  2. If regular shampoo doesn't work, use a clarifying shampoo. Purifying shampoos are made to give your hair an extra deep clean of all the gunk and product residue that can cling to your hair over time (and that regular shampoos often can't remove). These types of shampoos are used in the same way as regular shampoos. Apply the clarifying shampoo to your damp hair, massage it into your scalp, massage the rest of your hair strands, then rinse completely.
    • Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner after using the clarifying shampoo, as the latter can remove many of the natural vitamins and minerals from the hair and cause it to dry out. A moisturizing shampoo and conditioner will help replenish these minerals that have been removed.
  3. Try dry shampoo to soak up some of the excess oil. Before using the dry shampoo, go over the entire length of your hair with a clean, dry towel. Rub your hair lightly, starting at the roots, then working through to the ends. This will help soak up some of the oil on the surface. Then apply a dry shampoo (powder) to your hair. Spray some dry shampoo on your hair and massage it into your scalp.
    • You can use a boar bristle brush to distribute the grease in your hair.
    • If your hair is still quite greasy, try adding some baby powder to the dry shampoo. Work it into your scalp until the white is gone completely.
  4. Use a little washing-up liquid for grease that does not come out. Dishwashing liquid is very good at removing gunk and dirt from dishes, and can clean your hair too! Simply apply two tablespoons of dish soap to your hair and massage it into your scalp. Work it in the length of your hair. Rinse your hair thoroughly to make sure all of the detergent has been removed as it can be quite harmful to your hair if left on for too long.
    • Use a dishwasher detergent made for sensitive skin, as this type is gentler on your hair.
    • Don't forget to shampoo and condition your hair after rinsing out the detergent. This helps to return some of the nutrients to your hair that was washed out during the wash.
  5. Use your normal conditioner after shampooing. Once you are done washing your hair, you should condition your hair as usual. Massage the conditioner into your scalp with your fingers and work it through to the ends of your hair.
    • Let the conditioner sit in your hair for a few minutes before rinsing it thoroughly with warm water.
  6. Use leave-in conditioner. After washing thoroughly in the shower, apply leave-in conditioner to wet hair to get the last of the hard-to-remove grease away. You can just apply it to your hair and leave it on, without having to rinse or remove it.
    • Leave-in conditioners come as sprays or creams.
    • You can use leave-in conditioner in addition to regular conditioner if it is difficult to get oil out of your hair.

Method 2 of 2: Using home remedies

  1. Make a paste with baking soda. Put some baking soda in your hand and add a little water until it becomes a paste. Apply the paste to all of your hair - from roots to ends. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes and then rinse with warm water.
    • You may need to make more of the paste to make sure it's enough for all of your hair.
  2. Rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar. Mix equal amounts of water and apple cider vinegar and then apply the solution to your hair using a spray bottle. Massage it into your scalp, cover your hair with a shower cap and let the vinegar sit for 15 minutes. Rinse the solution with warm water and then apply conditioner to replenish the moisture and get rid of the vinegar smell.
    • You can also use natural vinegar to rinse your hair.
  3. Use aloe vera. Aloe vera contains many minerals and enzymes that can help remove oil from your hair. You can just apply the aloe vera gel directly to your hair and let it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse your hair with lukewarm water after the allotted time.
    • Alternatively, you can add a teaspoon of aloe vera gel to two tablespoons of regular shampoo and stir in a teaspoon of lemon juice. Stir the ingredients together until well blended, then apply to your hair and let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing.
  4. Rinse your hair with rosemary and mint. Pour two cups of water into a pot and turn the stove on to high heat. While the water is heating, add a 5cm sprig of rosemary and a tablespoon of mint leaves. Let the water with the leaves boil for a few minutes. Squeeze the juice of a lemon into the mixture and let it cool.
    • When the water is cool enough to touch, use it to rinse the oil from your hair. Massage it into your scalp and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it out with lukewarm water.
  5. Make an egg rinse. Break a raw egg and put the contents in a bowl. Beat the egg (as if you were making scrambled eggs) so that the yolks and whites mix completely. Add two tablespoons of cool water and stir the mixture well. Massage the egg mixture into your hair with your fingers.
    • Let the mixture sit on your hair for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it with cool water.
    • Additionally, massage about a teaspoon of Castile soap into your scalp. There is no need to massage this all the way to the ends of your hair. Rinse this out with lukewarm water as well.
