The smell of alcohol is known to linger. Several hours after drinking, or in the morning after a night out, your breath and skin may still smell of alcohol. Fortunately, by eating and drinking the right things and following some grooming guidelines, you can successfully disguise that alcohol smell. Plus, there are some steps you can take to avoid smelling of alcohol at all.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Eating and drinking concealing things

  1. Eat foods with garlic and onion. The most effective way to hide the smell of alcohol is to eat things that smell just as much. Try to eat things like breakfast with garlic and onion. Some ideas are:
    • Making an omelette for breakfast
    • Savory breakfast scones
    • Savory crepes
  2. Drink coffee. Another smelly thing you can consume that is effective in hiding the smell of alcohol is coffee. Have a cup of coffee in the morning and continue to drink coffee throughout the day. If you are sensitive to caffeine, switch to decaffeinated.
    • Be aware that coffee breath can also be offensive.
  3. Eat peanut butter for lunch. Peanut butter is also effective for hiding alcohol breath. Consider having a peanut butter snack with your lunch on that day. Some ideas are:
    • Ants on a log
    • Peanut butter sandwich
    • Noodles with peanut sauce
  4. Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is the best way to flush your system and get rid of the smell of alcohol (instead of just disguising it). Aim to drink about 3 ml per kilo of body weight. For example, if you weigh 70 pounds, try to drink 2.1 liters. Good news: water is also the best hangover cure.
  5. Chew gum during the day. When your body processes alcohol, the smell can return to your breath. Help keep those away by taking chewing gum or breath lozenges regularly throughout the day.

Method 2 of 3: Using grooming techniques

  1. Brush your teeth and use mouthwash. It is true that brushing your teeth alone is not enough to get rid of the smell of alcohol, but it is a crucial and important first step. Brush your teeth thoroughly with mint toothpaste, then use mint-flavored mouthwash.
    • You may need to bring your dental care products and repeat this later in the day.
  2. Exercise in the morning. 20-30 minutes of vigorous cardio in the morning can help your body process excess alcohol and sweat out some of the alcohol odor. Some ideas for a good sweat are:
    • Running
    • Jumping rope
    • Dancing to music
    • Step aerobics
  3. Take a shower. As with brushing your teeth, you may have heard that just taking a shower isn't enough to keep that alcohol smell away. But that doesn't mean you should skip the shower! Take a good, long shower. Wash your hair and use scented soap.
    • If you plan to exercise, wait until afterward to shower.
  4. Hide the smell of your sweat. You will likely sweat during the day. This can release the smell of alcohol back onto your body. You can counteract this by using deodorant after your shower. You can also sprinkle some baby powder on your body to absorb extra sweat and keep you smelling fresh.
    • You may need to reapply these products later in the day.
    • If you sweat a lot, you may need to change your clothes by mid-day.
  5. Use perfume or cologne. A little scent can go a long way to hide the smell of drink. Use a little bit of your favorite fragrance. Don't put on too much. Instead, consider adding some perfume / cologne later in the day.

Method 3 of 3: Avoid the smell of alcohol

  1. Drink responsible. The best way to avoid an alcohol smell is to avoid it before it happens. Limit yourself to 1-2 drinks a day, or to 3 on special occasions. The following amounts are equal to "1 drink":
    • 350 ml beer
    • 150 ml of wine
    • 45 ml distilled spirits (40% alcohol)
  2. Alternate between water and alcoholic drinks. For every glass of beer, wine or cocktail that you drink, you drink 1 glass of water. This prevents you from drinking too much and helps your body process the alcohol better. This can help prevent an alcohol smell.
  3. Clean your clothes, including your outerwear. Every time you wear a piece of clothing to a party or bar, make sure you clean it afterwards. This is especially true for outdoor clothing (such as jackets, coats and headgear). By cleaning these garments, you reduce your chances of taking in an alcohol smell that lingers.
    • Anytime you put these items in a drinking situation, there is a chance that they will be spilled on them.
    • If you don't get these garments cleaned, you may not even notice a stain until you wear it the next time.
