If you have a collection of old original Xbox games lying around in a box somewhere, chances are you can still enjoy them. Many of the games released for the original Xbox are compatible with the Xbox 360. You may need to download an update for the game to work and be aware that not all games are supported, but this is a great way to still get some work done with your old. games.

To step

1. Install an official Xbox 360 hard drive if you don't already have one. While most Xbox 360 game consoles have a built-in hard drive, there are also models that don't. An official Xbox 360 hard drive is required to store the emulation software and saved game data for the Xbox games.
   • Non-Microsoft hard drives will not contain the emulation software. If you buy a hard drive for your Xbox 360, make sure it is an official hard drive.
   • Use the included transfer cable and CD to transfer the data from your Xbox 360 to the new hard drive before installing. You can then install the hard drive by removing the side panel from the Xbox 360 and inserting the hard drive. Check out this guide for detailed instructions.
2. Connect your Xbox 360 to the internet. In order to download updates required to play the game, your Xbox 360 must be connected to the Internet when you first play the game.
   • You can connect to Xbox Live from the System Settings menu. You will need an Xbox Live account if you don't already have one and you will be guided through the process if this is your first time connecting. Click here for instructions on how to connect your Xbox 360 to the internet.
3. Install the latest system updates through Xbox Live. Updating your system will allow you to install the emulation software required to run the Xbox game.
   • Your console will usually ask to update automatically when you are connected to Xbox Live and an update is available.
   • If you don't have an internet connection, system updates are usually included with the game discs you buy. Buying a recent game for Xbox 360 ensures that you get a recent update.

4. Plug your original Xbox game into the Xbox 360. The game will start automatically and you will see the Xbox logo. Not all games can be played on the Xbox 360. Check out the following link for a complete list of games that are not compatible with Xbox 360. [1].
5. Install the game update when prompted. When you place the game in the console, you may be asked to download an update. Some games do not require an update in order to be downloaded, while others require a specific update for the game.
   • You must be connected to the Internet to download the update file you need to play the game. If you get the message that your game is not compatible, but if the list says it is, then make sure your console is connected to the internet.
6. Start playing the game. After the update is installed, the game will start. You don't need to download anything in the future to play the game again.

Resolving problems

1. Double check if your game is compatible. Not all Xbox games can be played on Xbox 360. Double check the above list to see if your game will work.
2. Check for scratches in the disc. If there are too many scratches in the game, there is a chance that it cannot be played. If possible, try testing it on another system to see if it is on your console or if the disk cannot be read properly.
   • If there are scratches in the disc, you may be able to fix this by brushing with toothpaste. Use a small drop and polish on the scratches, using straight lines from the center of the disc outward. Rinse and let dry when done. Click here for detailed instructions.
3. Check your network connection. You may need to download an update for the game when you launch it. To do this you must be connected to Xbox Live with a Silver (free) or Gold account.
4. Make sure you have an official hard drive. Only Microsoft's official hard drives contain the emulation software required to run Xbox games. If you bought your hard drive elsewhere, it may be an imitation.
   • An official disc may contain errors. Microsoft will be able to replace it if the drive is still under warranty.
