McAfee Security Center is an antivirus software tool that helps detect viruses, spyware and other malware. It may already be installed on your computer before purchase. Uninstalling McAfee can be very difficult and requires more work than uninstalling an average program.

Method 1 of 2: Removing McAfee products in Windows

1. Open the Control Panel. You can access it from the Start menu. If you are using Windows 8, right click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the desktop and select "Control Panel"
2. Select "Programs and Features" or click on "Uninstall a program".
   • If you are using Windows XP, choose "Add or Remove Programs".
3. Select McAfee Security Center and click.Uninstall. If this doesn't work, read on.
4. Close all windows and restart the computer. This ensures that no additional processes are running.
5. Click Start and search for "services.msc". Select it from the search results.
6. Right-click on each McAfee listing and select "Properties".
7. Click on the.General tab. Click on the "Startup Type" menu and select "Disabled".
8. Click on the.Recovery tab. Select "Take No Action" in case the service does not work.
9. Restart the computer. During the computer restart, no McAfee services should be running.
10. Delete the McAfee installation again. Go back to the Control Panel and try uninstalling McAfee again. McAfee would now successfully uninstall, now that none of its services are running. If this doesn't work, read on.
11. Download the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool. The MCPR tool is small (3MB) and available for free from the McAfee website. The MCPR will remove the following programs:
    • McAfee Security Center
    • McAfee Privacy Service
    • McAfee Data Backup
    • McAfee Personal Firewall Plus
    • McAfee Easy Network
    • McAfee AntiSpyware
    • McAfee Network Manager
    • McAfee SpamKiller
    • McAfee VirusScan
    • McAfee SiteAdvisor
    • McAfee Wireless Network Security
12. Right click on the downloaded file and select "Run as Administrator".
13. Click.Next to start the uninstallation.
    • Some users report better results when the MCPR tool is running in Safe Mode.
14. Click on .Yes once the User Account Control (UAC) window appears. The UAC is a system protector that tries to prevent unauthorized changes to system files.
15. Accept the "End User License Agreement" (EULA). Click Next to accept it. Enter the Captcha to continue.
16. Restart your computer to complete the uninstallation. You will notice that the procedure is complete when the message "Cleanup Successful" appears. You will have to restart the computer to completely uninstall McAfee.
    • If the MCPR tool indicates that the deletion was unsuccessful, click the View Logs button. The log will open in Notepad. Click File and select Save As. Save the log somewhere on your desktop under the name MCPR_date.txt. Call McAfee Technical Support for assistance. Give them the log file to help look for the error.

Method 2 of 2: Removing McAfee products in OS X

1. Open your Applications folder.
2. Double click on the "McAfee Internet Security Uninstaller".
3. Check the "Uninstall SiteAdvisor" box.
4. Click.Continuous.
5. Enter your administrator password and click.OK.
6. Click.Finish when the uninstallation is complete. If McAfee refuses to be uninstalled, read on.
7. Click on "Go" and select "Utilities".
8. Open the "Terminal".
9. Type the following command and press.Return:
   • / usr / local / McAfee / uninstallMSC
10. Enter your administrator password and press.Return. You do not see any characters while typing the password.
11. Wait until you get a message that the uninstallation is complete. If the procedure has been successful, you will receive the following message:
    • UIFramework uninstalled Successfully

Tips

• If you are having trouble removing Norton and McAfee, always make sure nothing is disabled in the MSCONFIG> Startup and Services tab. Disabling something related to the software to be removed can cause problems.
• To remove SecurityCenter, you will need to remove VirusScan, Personal Firewall, Privacy Service, and SpamKiller.
