Cookies always taste best when you eat them fresh from the oven, but sometimes you have to save them for later. If you have the willpower not to eat them right away, keep them in an airtight container along with a piece of bread. This will make them taste fresh for longer. If you want to keep the cookies fresh for a longer period, put them in a sealed bag in the freezer.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Keep cookies in a container

  1. Let homemade cookies cool completely before storing. Warm cookies release vapor into the air, which moistens the other cookies in the tray. Since nobody likes a moist biscuit, it is better to let the biscuits cool on a cooling rack before putting them in the container.
    • If you don't have a cooling rack, let the cookies cool on a plate.
  2. Transfer the cookies to an airtight container. This prevents the cookies from becoming soft and crumbly. Airtight zip lock bags and plastic bins are easy and inexpensive options. If possible, opt for a container that the cookies will fit just right in. This limits the air flow in the container and the cookies will taste fresh for longer.
    • If you brought or made different kinds of cookies, keep them in different bins, as storing soft and crispy cookies together will make the harder cookies go limp.
    • If you plan to store the cookies in a plastic container, make sure it is made of food-safe plastic first.
    • If you are storing very hard or crispy cookies, put them in some sort of cookie jar that allows a little airflow.
  3. Place sheets of parchment paper between the cookie layers. If you have a large batch of cookies, put sheets of parchment paper between each layer of cookies so they don't stick together.
    • If you don't have parchment paper, use wax paper or a tortilla instead.
    • Do not stack cookies with a frosting or that are very soft.
  4. Place a piece of white bread in the cookie box to keep it fresh. White bread absorbs the moisture so that the cookies remain crispy and fresh. Place a piece of fresh white bread in the top of the bag or tray.
    • If you don't have fresh white bread at home, use a tortilla instead.
  5. Keep the skillet at room temperature. Homemade soft cookies last for three days and hard or wrapped cookies last for two weeks, that is… if you don't eat them sooner! Keep the tray out of the sun to make the cookies taste their best.

Method 2 of 2: Freeze cookies

  1. Transfer the cold cookies to an airtight plastic bag. Wait for the cookies to feel cool. This will prevent them from creating vapor in the bag and becoming damp. Get a sealable bag large enough to hold the cookies in a single layer.
    • A sealed bag prevents the cookies from absorbing other flavors and smelling strange.
    • Freeze the cookies without icing and add the icing once thawed. This will keep the icing looking and tasting its best.
  2. Store the cookies in multiple bags if they cannot be stored in one layer. If there are too many cookies to put them in one layer, divide them into several sealable bags. This will prevent the cookies from sticking together.
  3. Freeze the airtight bag for up to five months. Over time, the cookies will start to lose flavor. Eat the cookies within five months to make sure they taste their best. Write the date on the bag with a waterproof marker so that you can calculate how long the cookies have been in the freezer.
  4. Thaw the cookies at room temperature for 15 minutes. Remove the cookies from the sealed bag and place on a plate to cool. Eat the delicious cookies as soon as they are completely thawed.
    • If there happen to be flies around, cover the biscuits with a linen cloth while they thaw.
    • If you want to reheat a cookie, just put it in the microwave for 10 seconds.
  5. Store the thawed cookies in an airtight container for up to seven days. Chances are you will eat the cookies soon, but if there are still a few left, keep them in a closed container. As a result, they will retain their original texture and remain fresh.
    • Discard the cookies after seven days, as the dairy products in the cookies will no longer be at their best.
