Coffee can do more than just give a boost in the morning - research shows that coffee can stimulate hair growth as well as increase shine and bring depth to dark hair colors. But you won't get those effects from drinking a bowl of comfort - follow these instructions to learn how coffee can make your hair shine.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Treat your hair with a coffee rinse

  1. Make a strong pot of coffee. You make a regular pot of coffee with 2 tablespoons (7-9 grams or 2 measuring spoons) of ground coffee per cup, about 180 ml of water. To make the coffee stronger, add another 1-2 tablespoons of ground coffee. For a pot equal to 8 cups of coffee, use 1.5 liters of water and 18-20 tablespoons (80 grams) of ground coffee.
    • Note that the stronger the coffee, the darker the brew. Your hair color will darken if you soak your hair with coffee, which can be great for brunettes or those with gray hair as it can add depth and darken your hair color.
    • If you are a blonde, have light red hair, or have colored your hair in a light color, you may want to choose a different treatment for your hair. Otherwise, you could end up with filthy or dirty looking hair.
    • If you don't have coffee, you can use a ground espresso instead.
    EXPERT TIP

Shampoo your hair as usual, rinse well. Make sure you have rinsed out the shampoo completely. Use your hands to gently squeeze excess water from your hair - it doesn't have to be completely dry, but it shouldn't be dripping wet anymore.

  2. While standing in the bathtub, pour cold coffee all over your hair, starting at the root. For a thorough treatment, use a bucket or large bowl to catch the dripping coffee as you pour it through your hair. Then pour the collected coffee through your hair a second time.
    • If you want more control over the application, pour the cooled coffee into a spray bottle and spray it into your hair.
    • If you are concerned about the stains that coffee can leave in the bathtub or shower floor, pour the coffee over your hair while hanging over a bucket to collect the coffee.
    • Rinse away any coffee in your bathtub immediately to prevent stains.
  3. Gather your hair under a shower cap and leave it on for 20-60 minutes. If you don't have an old shower cap, wrap your hair in an old towel that you don't mind ruining. Remember that coffee stains textiles and certain porous surfaces, so don't let your hair drip on carpet or furniture, and don't wear fancy or light-colored clothes.
    • If coffee gets on your face or runs down your neck, clean it with soap and water so that it doesn't stain your skin.
    • The longer you let the coffee sit, the darker your hair can get.
  4. Rinse your hair with warm water and let your hair air dry. If you repeat this treatment, your hair will become even darker, shinier and hair growth will improve while also reducing hair loss.
    • If you want to get the most out of coffee's coloring properties, rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar as this will help set the color.

Method 2 of 2: Treat your hair with ground coffee

  1. Brew a pot of coffee with about 8 tablespoons (30-35 grams) of ground coffee. You only need a handful of coffee grounds, so this should give you enough to work with. Feel free to use more or less depending on what you think you need.
    • Coffee grounds will darken your hair, so if you have light-colored hair, you may want to try a different method to make your hair shine.
  2. Place a coffee filter or cheesecloth over your drain. You don't want the coffee grounds to wash away - it can damage your drain and belong in the bin. A filter will catch the sludge before it washes away and when you are done with your treatment you can throw it in the garbage.
  3. Massage a handful cooled coffee grounds in wet hair. Work the slime through your hair, rubbing it into your scalp and crunching it into your longer strands. The coarse mess will exfoliate your scalp, which stimulates your hair follicles and can kick-start hair growth.
    • If you want to make the coffee grounds part of your regular grooming routine, dry up the sludge and then add it to your shampoo, conditioner or hair oil.
  4. Rinse your hair making sure to wash out all the coffee grounds. The coffee grounds should have removed any build-up from your hair, leaving it soft, shiny and healthy. Dispose of the coffee grounds you have collected in the drain by throwing the filter in the garbage or on the compost pile.
    • After regular use, you will notice that your hair also grows faster. The caffeine in the coffee blocks a hormone that causes hair loss and makes your hair stay in the growth phase longer than usual.
    • Dry your hair with an old towel and remember that if your wet hair drips onto your clothes, the coffee will likely ruin them. Wear a towel around your shoulders or an old T-shirt until your hair is dry.

Warnings

  • Coffee can stain your towels and other materials; keep this in mind when setting up your treatment room.
  • Make sure the coffee is really not hot. Your scalp is more sensitive to temperature than your hands, so if it feels hot on your hands, it will feel even hotter on your head.
  • Do not use a coffee treatment on very light or bleached hair. Coffee will stain porous or light hair.
