Blinds are very prone to dust and dirt, and they are not the easiest item in the house to clean. Sometimes it is enough to quickly wipe the blinds with a sponge, but it is best to remove them from the window a few times a year and clean them well to keep them looking like new. Read this article if you want to know how to clean blinds, mini blinds or slats with different methods.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Fast dusting techniques

  1. Use a feather duster. If there is a thin layer of dust on your blinds, a feather duster is enough to clean them. Open the blinds and run the feather duster between the different strips to remove the dust on both sides.
  2. Use an old sock or glove. If you're looking for a method that can get you into hard-to-reach areas, find an old sock or glove and put it on your hand. Spray glass cleaner on part of the blinds and run your covered hand over it to remove the dust. Repeat this for all strips.
    • Glass cleaner is safe to use on most blinds, but if you prefer a natural cleaner, use a solution of one part water and one part vinegar.
    • To clean even faster, open the blinds and use your glove or sock covered thumb and forefinger to grasp a strip at the end. Run your fingers along the entire length of the strip to remove the dust from both sides at the same time. Repeat this for all strips.
  3. Vacuum your blinds with the vacuum cleaner hose or a vacuum cleaner brush. In many cases you can already properly clean your blinds by vacuuming them. It is also a good way to prepare very dusty blinds for the next step of the cleaning process. Start with closed blinds.
    • Connect the vacuum cleaner hose to the vacuum cleaner.
    • Turn on the vacuum cleaner and run the hose over all the strips. Do this from left to right or top to bottom, depending on what kind of blinds you have.
    • Turn the blinds the other way and repeat the process to clean the other side as well.

Method 2 of 3: Clean the blinds where they hang

  1. Wipe the blinds with a damp sponge. Close the blinds, dampen a sponge with warm water and run it lengthwise over all the strips. Turn the blinds the other way and repeat the process to clean the other side as well.
    • If your blinds are very dirty, rinse and wring the sponge regularly to clean it and make sure you don't get more dirt on the blinds.
    • Soapy water is safe to use on most blinds and works well if the blinds are covered with a thick layer of dust. Fill a bucket with warm water and soap, take it to the window where the blinds are hanging, and use the sponge to clean the blinds. Stir the soapy water with the sponge and wring it out regularly while cleaning.

Method 3 of 3: Powerful cleaning techniques

  1. Try the two S hook method. Grab two S hooks and hang them on the inside of the rod for your shower curtain. Make sure you have slid the shower curtain open to one side. Remove the blinds from the window and take them to the bathroom. Hang the blinds at the bottom of the S-hooks by tucking the hooks under the thin metal bar at the top of the blinds. Make sure they hang securely. Turn on the tap and let the water heat up. Squeeze a little soap onto a soft scrub brush and wet it with the water. Scrub the blinds thoroughly.
    • Start at the top and scrub from side to side. If you have vertical blinds, scrub them from top to bottom.
    • Rinse the scrub brush and add more soap as needed.
    • Now turn the blinds the other way and scrub them on the other side.
    • When you're done scrubbing, turn on the showerhead and use it to rinse the blinds.
    • Let the blinds drain or dry with a towel. Put your shiny blinds back on the window.
  2. Clean the blinds outside. You can clean very dirty blinds outside with a garden hose. Take your blinds outside and place them on a mat or rug. Fill a bucket with soapy water. Use a scrub brush or sponge to scrub the blinds on both sides. Rinse the blinds on both sides with a garden hose. Dry them with a towel and hang them on the window again.

Tips

  • You can take fabric blinds to a dry cleaner.
  • If you're using a cleaner on your blinds for the first time, test it on an inconspicuous area first to make sure it won't stain.

Warnings

  • Do not use the powerful cleaning methods on fabric blinds. It could rip the fabric.
  • Be careful not to soak your wooden blinds with water. This can cause stains or warp the wood. If you use water to clean wooden blinds, wipe it off immediately.
  • Be careful not to let the blinds fall on top of you when using the S-hook method. Do not let small children clean the blinds with this method.
