In Facebook, the term "mutual friends" refers to friends you and a stranger have in common. "Joint Friend" is not a label that you can apply to someone else. It is simply a way of informing you that you are sharing certain friends with someone. You can turn mutual friends into Facebook friends by using the "People You May Know" tool. For some people, you will need to have at least one mutual friend before you can send a friend request.

To step

Part 1 of 2: With the "People You May Know" list

  1. Open the Facebook app. Log in to your Facebook account if you have not already done so.
    • You can also log in to the Facebook website. Enter your email and password to login.
  2. Add all your real life friends. The more friends you add to Facebook, the more people will appear in the "People You May Know" list based on mutual friends .:
    • Open their profile page by searching for their name, email address or phone number at the top of the app or website.
    • Press or click the "Add Friend" button on their profile page. When they accept your friend request, they will be added to your friends list.
    • If the "Add Friend" button is not available, then you must have at least one mutual friend with that person. Keep adding other people and soon you will have a mutual friend anyway.
  3. Open the "People You May Know" list. This list shows people you share a mutual friend with. You will see the number of mutual friends you share with this person under their name. For example, if it says "15 mutual friends," it means that your list contains 15 friends who are also friends with the person in question.
    • Android - Press the Friends button at the top of the screen, then scroll down until you reach the "People You May Know" section.
    • iPhone - Press the Friends button at the top of the screen, then scroll down until you reach the "People You May Know" section.
    • Desktop - Click the Friends button in the blue bar at the top of the Facebook page and select "View all". Scroll down the list of people Facebook thinks you might know based on your mutual friends.
  4. Press or click "Add Friend" next to someone in the "People You May Know" section. This will send a friend request to that person. If they accept, they will be added to your friends list and your "People You May Know" list will grow longer.
  5. See which mutual friends you share with someone. You can view the mutual friends you share with someone else.
    • Open the person's profile page. This works best when you are already friends with him or her so that their friends list is not hidden.
    • Press or click the Friends "tab to open their friends list.
    • Tap or click the "Collaborative" tab to see which friends you share with this person.

Part 2 of 2: Adding mutual friends

  1. Add mutual friends if you can't add someone as a friend. When you view a stranger's Facebook profile, you may notice that the "Add Friend" button is missing. This is because that person has set their security settings to only receive friend requests from people with whom they share at least one mutual friend. You must be friends with at least one person from their friends list before you can send a friend request.
  2. Press or click the "Friends" tab on their profile page. Many people make their friends list public, so you can also send friend requests to people in their friends list.
  3. Find people to add. You will see a list of all of that person's friends (if this list is public).
    • If the "Friends" tab does not show friends, then you have to hope that you will eventually share a mutual friend with this person. Keep an eye out for messages they respond to and send friend requests to the originator of those messages.
  4. Send friend requests. Once at least one accepts someone, you will be able to send a friend request to the person you originally wanted to add as a friend.
  5. Add friends using your own friends list. When you view the friends list of friends, you will see all your mutual friends at the top. After scrolling through your mutual friends, you will see people sharing friends with you, ranked by the number of mutual friends you both have. You can send a friend request to these people by pressing or clicking "Add Friend".
