Taking a shirt off may seem easy and most people do it on a daily basis without much thought. However, if you're wearing very tight T-shirts, tank tops, blouses, or compression shirts, they can be deceptively difficult to take off. The method you choose to take off your shirt depends on the type of shirt: T-shirts can be taken off immediately, while blouses or sweaty workout clothes can take more effort.

To step

Part 1 of 4: Preparing to take off your shirt

  1. First, take off your jewelry. Take off any necklaces or earrings before taking off your shirt. They can get caught in the fabric, especially if your shirt is very tight. Earrings are especially dangerous when caught, as they can easily tear your earlobe if you pull too hard.
  2. Remove any hair accessories from your hair. Clips, bobby pins or other accessories can stick to shirts just as easily as jewelry. It is quite painful if your hair is pulled, so remove all hair accessories from your hair before taking off your shirt.
  3. Remove makeup. If you are wearing it, remove your makeup before taking off your shirt. Rubbing your face while taking it off can leave stains and ruin your clothes. Remove makeup beforehand to reduce the chance of your shirt getting dirty.
  4. Stand in an open area. The more open space you have, the less likely you are to hit objects when you take your shirt off. You may have to move your arms a lot to get off a really tight shirt, so you want to have plenty of room. For example, try taking your shirt off in your room instead of a small bathroom.

Part 2 of 4: Take off a T-shirt

  1. Roll the shirt up to your torso. Start with the bottom of the shirt, and roll or fold the bottom of the shirt up until your upper body is visible. This will bring most of the shirt together in one place, saving the more difficult parts like the neck and arms for last.
  2. Push the rolled-up torso portion over your shoulders. Keep rolling it up and bulging so that the bottom of the shirt is now around your shoulders. You may have to push hard to stretch the bottom of the shirt around your shoulders, depending on how tight the shirt is.
  3. Pull the neck over your head. Once the shirt is all the way over your shoulders, pull the neckline up over your head. The folded bottom part of the shirt will still be around your shoulders and the sleeves will still be around your arms. If you want to protect your hairstyle, use both hands to stretch the neckline over your head without touching your hair.
  4. Stretch out your arms. Now that your neck is through and the shirt is stretched around your torso, raise your hands. The shirt will slide off your head and you will now only wear the shirt on your arms.
  5. Remove the shirt from your arms. Just lower your arms and pull the shirt off. This can be a bit tricky if the shirt has tight, long sleeves, but pull the shirt until it comes off. You've got your shirt off now!

Part 3 of 4: Taking off a blouse

  1. Untie the buttons from top to bottom. Mens-style shirts are usually buttoned from the neck to the bottom of the shirt, usually in the center. Always loosen the shirt from top to bottom before taking it off. Pulling the shirt over your head without unbuttoning will not work and you could tear the fabric. Push the buttons through the holes until all buttons are loose.
  2. Make sure to take off a tie. If you wear a tie with your blouse, make sure you take it off. You cannot take off your blouse if the tie is still clamped around the neck of the blouse. Untie the knot and take it off first.
  3. Untie the buttons on the sleeves. Men's shirts usually have buttons on the wrists. These buttons keep the sleeves clamped tightly around your wrists and depending on how big your hands are, they may not fit through the cuffs unless they are unbuttoned. Push the buttons through their holes with your free hand.
    • Since the hand with the cuff that you want to unbutton cannot grasp the buckle, you may have a little trouble untying the buttons. Hold the knot between your index and middle fingers, then push the fabric up over the knot.
  4. First take off one sleeve. It doesn't matter which sleeve you choose first. Choose which one is most comfortable for you. Grab the end of the sleeve close to your wrist and hold the fabric firmly as you pull your arm toward your body. You may have to pull hard if the shirt is tight.
  5. Pull out the other sleeve. Grab the other sleeve by the wrist with your free arm. Pull the shirt off your other arm. Your shirt will go into the hand of the sleeve you took off first.

Part 4 of 4: Troubleshoot other types of shirts

  1. Use the same method for sweaty training shirts. Tight sports shirts can get sweaty, but you should use the same method. The sweat can cause some friction, but this just means you have to pull a little harder. Also try to cross your arms as you pull the shirt over your head, which will give you more pulling power.
  2. Try to take off tank tops by going down and not up. If you're having trouble pulling a tight tank top off over your head, it could be because your arms are at an odd angle or not strong enough to pull it off. Instead, try pressing it down over your hips, all the way to your ankles. Then just get out. This only works for sleeveless tank tops or other shirts with wide necklines, as the neckline must be larger than your waist.
  3. Unbutton polos before taking them off. While your head may fit through the neck of a buttoned polo shirt, you can risk stretching it.First, unbutton the shirt, starting with the top button and working your way down: there are generally three buttons. Then take off the polo as you would with a normal T-shirt.
  4. Unzip shirts with zippers at the back. Many women's shirts have zippers or buttons on the neck. You may need to unbutton or unbutton these before you can easily take the shirt off. These buckles can be difficult to reach, so you may need to ask for help: ask a friend or family member in the house to help you open the shirt. It may be embarrassing to ask for help, but the other person may be your only hope. If no one is around, try using a mirror to see where the buckle is, then reach behind your neck and unzip it a little at a time.

Tips

  • Don't buy shirts that are too small. They might look good in the store, or you might think you're losing a few pounds to fit in, but you should always try to buy clothes that actually fit. Tight shirts are uncomfortable if you wear them for a long time, and taking them off becomes a chore.
  • Don't pull your shirt too hard. You can tear the fabric if you are not careful.

Warnings

  • Extremely tight clothing can compress your body and cause problems. Tight shirts can even cause acid reflux or stomach problems. Make sure you don't wear excessively tight clothes too often.
