Smartphones, iPods, PSPs, cameras and other electronic devices cost a lot of money. The screen is one of the most important parts that unfortunately gets damaged quickly. It is therefore understandable that you want to protect your screen. This article provides simple instructions for choosing and applying a screen protector and gives you some helpful tips.

Method 1 of 2: Apply the screen protector without using an applicator

1. Buy a screen protector. Usually you can buy these made to measure. (If you can't find a good screen protector, check out the Tips to find out how to cut one to size.) You can choose from screen protectors made from different materials:
   • Fairly hard and smooth plastic such as PET. This material is a bit like the plastic that transparent soda bottles are made of. These screen protectors are the most commonly used and generally work the best. (You can also buy special variants that are partially reflective or have a matte finish. These are nice, but less practical.)
   • Very hard and transparent tempered glass which is a stronger version of a cover glass for a microscope. This glass should have a plastic layer so that the pieces of glass will stick together when damaged. Glass is very resistant to scratches, but brittle. When there are pieces from the glass, the screen protector will continue to break.
   • Very sturdy and thick plastic like polycarbonate. This material is resistant to bumps and shocks, but is not very scratch resistant and will not keep looking good. With such a screen protector, your touchscreen may not work as well.
   • Soft vinyl. Such a screen protector is not recommended, because it is generally less pleasant to use. The material does protect the screen against scratches.
2. Understand the limitations of a screen protector. A screen protector mainly protects your screen against light scuffs and scratches, but not against cracks. Especially expensive smartphones with a glass front and a plastic edge that offers little impact protection can get damaged. A so-called "bumper case" that you put on the front of your phone can protect your phone from bumps and shocks quite well and in a stylish way. Do not put your phone in your back pocket and other places that can crack the screen.
   • Ideally, you protect your phone with a screen protector and a good case. If your phone falls, the screen protector and case protect your phone and they break instead of your phone.
3. Wash your hands. Dry them with a clean towel and shake off any fluff.
4. See how the screen protector should be placed. Remove it carefully from the box or packaging. Before removing the back, place the screen protector on the screen to see how much space you need to leave on both sides to ensure that functions such as your camera (which will not work as well due to the less smooth surface of the screen protector) and your microphone will continue to work properly.
5. Solve problems. Just ignore small mistakes like tiny dust particles, because trying to remove them will do more harm than good. The screen protector will soon be more damaged and you will eventually replace it with a new one. If you want to move the screen protector because it doesn't sit properly on the screen, gently lift one edge with a thin, blunt object, such as a piece of paper, a fingernail, or the edge of a plastic spoon. If you want to remove a large dust particle, try doing this with a post-it or a piece of transparent tape. Be careful not to touch the adhesive layer on the screen protector.
6. Ready. Use your device without fear of damage.

Method 2 of 2: Using an applicator

1. Lift the screen protector with the correct tab without removing the backing.
2. Pull the backing off the screen protector.
3. Run a tool over the screen protector to remove air bubbles. Use a debit card or your fingernail.
4. Push the applicator back and take your phone out of the applicator using the opening on the back.

Tips

• Make sure to tilt the screen when checking for dust on the screen.
• Apply the screen protector as slowly and gently as possible. There is nothing worse than a shaking hand when applying a screen protector.
• Do not touch the sticky part of the screen protector. Treat it in the same way as with a CD. That means that you do not touch the bottom.
• This is best done after removing the packaging.
• Keep the sticky side of the screen protector down when you peel off the backing. It will then be less likely to get dust on it when you apply the screen protector.
• You can also apply a piece of masking tape to the top of the screen protector (the non-adhesive side) to make it easier to place it in the right place.
• Prepare a mixture of 60ml water and a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol and / or a drop of dish soap to break the surface tension. Let a large drop of this fall on the screen before applying the screen protector so that you can remove air bubbles faster. Just be careful not to get the screen too wet, as water can get into the device. Let the screen protector dry for a few hours so that it is securely attached when you start using it.
• A screen protector is a simple accessory that is often sold at too high a price in stores. It is hoped that you only look at the price of the phone itself.
• You can easily cut or cut a thin plastic screen protector to size, preferably with a paper cutter. Make the screen protector slightly smaller than the screen so that it does not rise at the edges and take into account rounded corners. Hold the screen protector firmly and cut off immediately enough. If you later try to cut small pieces off, the edges will become irregular and curl.

Warnings

• Dust is everywhere. If you wait too long, dust will end up on your screen.
• Don't get frustrated. Keep in mind that a screen protector is a consumable item that must be neatly applied to protect the screen from serious damage. Ultimately, you will have to buy a new screen protector.
