Human hair wigs can be expensive, but they are well worth it. Because they are made from real hair, they are more flexible in straightening, curling and dyeing than wigs made from synthetic fibers. Like synthetic wigs, human hair wigs need to be washed regularly. Given their delicate nature, you have to be extra careful with them.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Washing the wig

  1. Brush or comb the wig from the ends to the roots. Gently comb the ends of the wig first. Once they are out of tangles, work your way up to the roots until you can run the brush or comb through without it snagging. For wigs with straight or wavy hair, use a wig brush with metal tines. For wigs with curls or African hair, use a wide tooth comb or just your fingers.
  2. Fill your sink with cold water and then stir in one to two squirts of shampoo. Use a high-quality shampoo that is suitable for the hair type you are going to wash. For example, if you are washing a wig with curls, use a shampoo specifically for curly hair.If you know the wig has been dyed, try a color-safe shampoo.
    • Do not apply the shampoo directly to the wig fibers. Instead, use the soapy water to wash the wig.
    • Do not use 2-in-1 shampoos that contain conditioner. You can use conditioner on the wig, but not too close to the roots.
  3. Turn the wig inside out and put it in the water. Use your fingers to turn the hood inside out and let the hair hang loosely. Place the wig in the water and press the hairs to submerge them. Swirl the wig gently in the soapy water to distribute the shampoo over the strands.
    • Turning the wig inside out makes it easier for the shampoo to reach the hood, where most of the dirt, sweat and oils collect.
  4. Let the wig soak for five minutes. Make sure the wig is completely submerged in the water. Do not move the wig during this time. Tousling, pinching and swirling too much causes the hair to become entangled.
  5. Rinse the wig with cool water until the shampoo is completely gone. You can rinse the wig in a bucket filled with fresh and cold water, or you can do it in the sink or shower. Depending on how thick the wig is, you may need to rinse it twice.
  6. Apply conditioner to the wig. Apply some conditioner to the hair and then gently comb it with your finger. If the wig has a lace front or a ventilating cap, make sure not to apply the conditioner to the cap. The strands are tied to the lace front. When you apply conditioner to them, the knots will come out and the strands will fall off. With a normal wig this will not be a problem, because the hairs are sewn in instead of knotted.
    • Use a high-quality conditioner.
    • You can also use a leave-in conditioner instead if you prefer.
  7. Wait two minutes before rinsing the conditioner with cool water. If you leave the conditioner on the wig for a few minutes, the nourishing oils can penetrate and moisturize the hair - just like your own hair. Once the two minutes are up, rinse the wig again with cool water until the water runs clear.
    • Skip this step if you are using a leave-in conditioner.

Part 2 of 3: Drying the wig

  1. Turn the wig right side out and gently squeeze out the water. Hold the wig over the sink and gently squeeze the hair with your hand. However, do not twist or twist the bristles as this can tangle or break them.
    • Do not brush the wig while it is wet. This can damage the hair and cause frizz.
  2. Roll up the wig with a towel to remove the excess water. Lay the wig on the end of a clean towel. Roll the towel into a tight bundle, starting from the end on which the wig rests. Press down on the towel, then gently roll it out and remove the wig.
    • If the wig has long hair, make sure the strands are smooth and not wrinkled.
  3. Apply the desired products to the wig. Spray the wig with some conditioning spray for easier detangling later; keep the bottle about 10 to 12 cm away from the wig. If the wig has curly hair, consider applying some styling mousse.
  4. Let the wig air dry on a wig stand and away from direct sunlight. Do not brush the wig when it is wet as this can damage the hair. If the wig has curly hair, use your fingers to "scrunch" the hair every so often.
    • Scrunch is done by tucking your hand under the tips of the hair, lifting it up and then curling your fingers inward. This causes the curls to pile up and take shape.
    • If you are using a Styrofoam wig head, make sure it is attached to a stable wig stand. If necessary, attach the wig to the wig head with pins.
  5. Dry the wig on your head if you are in a hurry. Use a hair dryer to dry the hood first. Once the hood is dry, place the wig on your head and secure it with hairpins. Finish blow drying the wig while it is on your head. Make sure to use the setting on low to avoid damaging the hair.
    • Make sure to pin your real hair and cover it with a hairnet before putting on the wig.
  6. Let the wig dry upside down if you want more volume. Turn the wig upside down and attach the neck portion of the wig to a trouser hanger. You need to place the pins on the trouser hanger closer together to do this. Hang the wig in the shower for a few hours to allow it to air dry; do not use the shower at this time.
    • If the shower is not available, hang the wig somewhere that will not be damaged by the water dripping from the hair.

Part 3 of 3: Styling and maintaining the wig

  1. Brush the wig when it is completely dry. Again, use a wig brush with metal tines if the wig's hair is straight or wavy, and a wide tooth comb if it is curly. Start at the points and work your way up to the roots. Apply a detangling product if necessary.
  2. If necessary, curl the wig again. Some wigs are made of hair that is naturally curly. Other wigs are made of straight hair curled with a curling iron. With the latter, the curls come out when washing. Fortunately, it is easy to curl it again using the same technique you would on your own hair.
    • Hair rollers are much safer because they do not require heat. If you must use a curling iron, use it on a lower heat setting.
  3. Leave the wig on a vase or a wig stand when you are not wearing it. If you are using a vase, consider putting a tissue with perfume in it.
  4. Wash the wig again if it gets dirty. If you wear the wig daily, wash it every two to four weeks. If you wear it less often, wash it once a month.
  5. Take care of your own hair if you wear the wig daily. Even if you cover your own hair with a wig, it doesn't mean you should neglect your own hair. Keeping your hair and scalp clean will also keep your wig clean for longer.
    • If you have dry hair, keep it moisturized. This will not affect your wig, but it will keep your own hair healthy.

Tips

  • Be careful when untangling the wig. Use plenty of detangling conditioners if necessary.
  • Wash your wig before putting it on for the first time. Even if the wig is brand new, it may have become contaminated during the manufacturing, packaging and shipping process.
  • If the cold water does not work on the wig, you can use warm water up to 35 ° C.
  • Choose high quality products that do not contain sulfates, parabens and minerals. Consider using products that contain aloe vera and / or glycerin.
  • You can buy wig stands and Styrofoam heads online and in wig stores. Some costume and craft stores also sell Styrofoam heads.
  • If you can't find a stand for a Styrofoam head, make your own by inserting a thick rod into a Christmas tree stand.
  • You can also use shampoos and conditioners designed specifically for wigs, but be sure to read the label first to make sure they are safe for human hair wigs.

Warnings

  • Do not use brushes on wigs with curly hair; use your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Using brushes on curls leads to frizz.
  • Avoid using too high a heat on the wig. Although the bristles do not melt, they can be damaged.
