An impossible cube (sometimes irrational cube called) is a drawing of a cube that cannot exist. You can find an example of this in M.C. Escher's work Belvedere. Fortunately, you don't have to be a talented artist to draw an impossible cube. This article will show you how to make one.

To step

  1. Draw a narrow, upright parallelogram leaving the lower left corner open. From there, draw two horizontal lines, as shown in red in the picture.
  2. To the right of the parallelogram, draw two connected lines in an "L" shape.
  3. Continue the lines from the bottom left corner, but let them start to the right of the double vertical line so that it looks like they go underneath. The top of the two is angled upwards. The bottom one angles down and connects to the "L".
  4. Parallel to where the previous lines split, draw a wide "L".
  5. Connect the bottom of the wide "L" to the top right corner of the parallelogram. You do this by drawing a line up, which makes a right angle to the left and goes under all the lines it encounters.
  6. Draw a line along the top part of the parallelogram and let it curve to the right and continue underneath everything it encounters like the line in the previous step.
  7. Complete the parallelogram on top of the cube with the right corner open and connected to the vertical double lines drawn earlier.
  8. Draw a border around the whole figure. Now you have drawn an impossible cube yourself!

Tips

  • Practice makes perfect.
  • You can optionally use a ruler.
  • Practice on graph paper.
