Your makeup can quickly become a mess. If you need more time to find your things than to make up, read on for tips on how to better organize your makeup kit.

To step

  1. Find a spacious place where you can spread out all the materials you will be cleaning up. Take your time for this whole project.
  2. Get all make-up and skin care products come out and take a good look at them. These are some of the best-known products that can be in a makeup kit:
    • Foundation gives the skin an even tone and a soft surface on which to apply the other products.
    • Concealer is used to hide blemishes, pimples, bags under the eyes and other imperfections.
    • Rouge gives your face more depth and can give the skin a youthful look.
    • Eyeshadow is there for every skin tone.

      • You put neutral and complementary colors that you use during the day on the "during the day" pile.
      • Striking and dramatic colors are placed on the stack of "special occasions".
    • Apply eyeliner to the edges of your eyelids, close to your eyelashes and just below your eyes.
    • You use powder to keep the foundation beautiful for longer.
    • Pay close attention to the shades of lipstick and / or lip gloss that you put in your makeup set. Find something that matches the other products you want to use every day. See Tips for color choices.
    • Consider adding bronzer if you want some extra color on your face. This is especially nice in the summer when you want the sun to appear tanned without the damage from UV rays. You can add this to the "daily", "summer" or "special occasions" stack, depending on how often you plan to use it.
  3. Assess what you use on a daily basis and what you don't. Think about what you have time for each day and what you only use on special occasions. Be prepared to have 5 or 6 stacks when you are done. Collect your supplies in different piles, such as:
    • Daily use
      • These are the basic colors that go with almost everything, with matching lipstick. Keep it simple, unless you want to walk around with a trunk every day.
    • Skincare
      • These are your moisturizers, makeup remover, serums, sunscreens, acne products, etc. You can also add cotton balls, cotton buds, etc. here.
      • Eye makeup remover may be necessary if you are traveling, exercising, or just don't want to wear eye makeup all day long. To save space, you can also bring wipes with eye make-up remover.
    • Special occasions
      • These are the dramatic colors, colors you don't use that much, products you bought especially with an outfit, wild colors for carnival, glitter powder for a night at the club, false eyelashes and all the other things you rarely use.
    • Summer / winter (optional)
      • Sunbathing changes your skin color. People who like to sunbathe need different foundation and powder in the summer. If you are always very tan in the summer, you may need to make a stack of "summer" (with darker colors) and a stack of "winter" (with lighter shades).
  4. Discard anything that is old, broken, or irritating. When make-up is old, it has to go. Old make-up can contain bacteria, sometimes curdle or be difficult to apply. Here are some general guidelines for storing makeup:
    • Three months
      • Mascara
      • Liquid Eyeliner
    • Six months
      • Eye foundation
      • Eye cream
      • Eye primer
      • Cream eyeshadow
      • All other products based on gel or cream for the eyes
      • Face powder that you have applied with a brush or sponge.
      • Foundation in the form of cream
    • A year
      • Liquid foundation
      • Moisturizer
      • Concealer from a tube, without an applicator
    • If necessary
      • Powder blush
      • Powder eyeshadow
      • Eyeliner (pencil) as long as it does not harden, is difficult to apply or has dried out
      • Bronzer
  5. Include nail polish and nail polish remover in the daily set if you want to be able to touch up your nails. Otherwise, put it in a separate nail set and keep it elsewhere.
  6. Look at all the tools for applying your makeup. Do you have enough of it? Are they dirty? Are they on the bottom of a bag or drawer? These things get dirty quickly and can contain a lot of bacteria. Discard any used sponges and invest in easy-to-clean brushes. Discard all foundation sponges and powder puffs. By buying clean brushes you extend the shelf life of your make-up, because much less bacteria and fats end up in them. You will find brush sets with bags at all chemists and perfumeries. By keeping the brushes in bags, they stay neat, clean and do not bend the hair. These are the most popular makeup application tools:
    • Foundation brush or triangular sponge
    • Powder brush
    • Rouge brush
    • Large eyeshadow brush
    • Small or angled eyeshadow brush
    • Lip brush
    • Concealer brush
  7. Clean your tools if necessary. Clean your eyeliner by running a cotton ball soaked in alcohol along the tip and sharpening the tip well. Clean brushes with antibacterial soap and rinse well. If your brushes are tangled, distorted, or so cluttered with makeup that you don't really need to put on any new makeup, throw them out and start with fresh brushes.
  8. View the stacks and try to estimate what kind of bags you need. If you don't have bags that are big enough, or if they don't have enough pockets, it's time to go shopping. It is always better to have bags that are a little too big than a little too small.
  9. Shop at a drug store, perfumery, or department store and find makeup bags or boxes. Make sure everything you want to put in it fits, including your bags of brushes
    • Beauty cases are usually hard and have an extra tray in it so that you can easily organize them. They are heavy and clunky, but they protect your makeup well.
    • Bags come in different sizes and designs. Choose something specially made for make-up, as they are usually easy to clean on the inside, have a zipper so nothing can fall out and are usually lined for extra protection for your belongings.
    • Small toolboxes are often larger than a beauty case, less expensive and very useful if you want to store a lot of make-up. This is an excellent product for your special occasion makeup as you can see what's inside. And because you don't use it that often, you often forget what you have.
    • If you don't have to bring your makeup with you and only apply it at home, you can keep your daily makeup in a basket or drawer.
  10. Keep all make-up except your daily set somewhere in a closet. Make sure your daily set is easy to grab.
  11. Put your make-up in the right bags or suitcases.
  12. Keep anything you don't use every day in the right bag or suitcase, based on the categories above.
  13. Put brushes in their own bags so they are clean and protected and include them with your daily kit.
  14. Pat yourself on the back! Your make-up is neatly tidy, so from now on it's a lot easier and less stressful to put on yourself.

Tips

  • Small tool boxes are great as a makeup box. When you open them you will see several layers with trays and a lot of space at the bottom. Always put your brushes in separate bags so that they remain well protected.
  • Use smaller bags to organize your large bags. For that you can use those small bags that you often get at the perfumery. Use small bags to keep your lipsticks, eyeshadows, etc. separate.
  • If you have a lot of new products, samples, or gifts that don't suit your skin type, you might be able to trade them with a friend.
  • Buy good quality products that suit your skin type (normal, dry, oily) and skin tone (light, tinted, dark).
  • You can also buy brushes from an art supply store. Choose good quality brushes, the right size and with natural bristles. They last a long time and do not fall out so quickly. Always wash new brushes before using them and apply conditioner when the bristles are a little dry.
  • If you use different colors every day, toss the colors into your purse before you go out the door.
  • If you buy good products, get them from the same brand. Skincare products are made in such a way that they reinforce each other. If you use different brands together, you may get an allergic reaction due to the different substances they contain.
  • Use your own criteria to sort your makeup. If you don't have many extras, you can easily determine what you use every day.
  • If you need a lot of space and you don't care what your set looks like, buy one of those toolboxes your dad keeps in the shed.
  • Sorting your makeup by color can also be very helpful.

Warnings

  • Never share your makeup, brushes and sponges with others. If there is no other option, clean them well before and after use. The bacteria and fats from the other person's skin can contaminate your products and cause acne.
  • Makeup can break or leak. Put liquid products in plastic bags so that your whole set is not ruined if it starts to leak.
  • Dirty brushes can cause pimples.

Necessities
