If you delete your Dropbox account, you will lose all your files in your Dropbox. So you must ensure that all important documents are stored elsewhere before deleting your account. You can only delete a Dropbox account from the desktop website.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Backing up your files

  1. Log in to the Dropbox website on your computer. Once you delete your Dropbox account, you will no longer be able to log in to the website or app. You will also lose all files that you have not previously saved elsewhere. You cannot open your offline files without an account via the app. So the best way to save your files is on a computer.
  2. Select all the files you want to save. Keep ⌘ Command / Ctrl and click on all the files and folders you want to download.
  3. Click the "Download" button. You will now download all selected files and folders in a zip file. You can open this file later if you need your files. Downloading a large zip file may take a while.

Part 2 of 3: On a mobile device

  1. Open the Dropbox website in your device's browser. You cannot delete your account via the app. So you will have to open the website.
  2. Tap the "Desktop version" link at the bottom of the website. You can only delete an account via the desktop version of the website. You probably have to zoom in on the desktop website before you can see all the links.
  3. Cancel your Plus subscription if you have one. If you subscribe to Dropbox Plus, you must first cancel before you can delete your account. Go to https://www.dropbox.com/downgrade in your mobile browser and tap "I still want to cancel".
  4. Tap your name in the top right corner. First, zoom in if you are unable to tap it.
  5. Tap "Settings" in the menu that appears. You will now open a new page.
  6. Tap the "Account" tab. You may need to zoom in again to tap it.
  7. Scroll down and tap "Delete My Dropbox". This option can be found at the bottom of the menu, under "Connected services". You now open the form to delete your account.
  8. Enter your password in the form. To confirm it's you, you need to enter your password here.
  9. Choose a reason for leaving. You must choose a reason before you can proceed, but none of the options will affect the further process.
  10. Tap "Delete my account". Your account will now be closed and your files will no longer be synced. You will also no longer be able to open your files on your mobile device, because you can no longer use the app and the website. All files that are synchronized with your computer via the program, and files that you have downloaded yourself from the website are still available.

Part 3 of 3: On a computer

  1. Log in to the Dropbox website. Go to dropbox.com and log in with the account you want to delete.
  2. Back up any files you want to keep before deleting your account. If you close your Dropbox account, you will lose any files that you have not saved on your computer. If you have never installed the Dropbox program on your computer, you must first save the files you want to keep:
    • Select all the files and folders you want to save. Keep ⌘ Command / Ctrl and click on all the files and folders you want to download.
    • Click the "Download" button at the top of the list. You will now download all selected files and folders in a zip file.
    • Open the zip file if you need the files. Double-click the zip file to open it, then click "Extract" to copy the contents of the file to your hard drive for opening and editing.
  3. Cancel your Plus subscription if you have one. If you have Dropbox Plus, you will need to cancel it before you can delete your account.
    • Go to https://www.dropbox.com/downgrade and click "I still want to cancel" to cancel your subscription.
  4. Click on your account name in the top right corner. You will now see a small menu.
  5. Select "Settings". You will now open a page with settings for your account.
    • You can also go directly to dropbox.com/account.
  6. Click on the "Account" tab. You can now see how much storage space you are using.
  7. Scroll down and click on the "Delete my Dropbox" tab. You now open the form to delete your account.
  8. Enter your password. As a security measure, you must enter your password before you can delete your account.
  9. Choose a reason for leaving. It doesn't matter which option you select, but by choosing a fair reason you can help improve Dropbox.
  10. Click on "Delete my account". Your account will now be closed and your files will no longer be synced. You will no longer be able to access your files from the website or the app, but if you have the program installed on your computer, your files will still be in the Dropbox folder.
