If you've decided that you want to cancel your Skype account, but you're not sure how to do it, you'll find that Skype hasn't made it easy to find the answer. Read how to do it here.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Request an account deletion

  1. Visit the Skype support page. Unfortunately, Skype does not offer personal support in Dutch. Click here to go to English language customer support. Only in this way can you completely delete an account. You can also go here if you want to report identity fraud.
  2. Sign In. Enter your username and password to log in to the customer support website. If you don't remember your password, go back to the login screen and click "Forgotten your password?" below the password field.
    • If someone has stolen your account and you can no longer log in, follow these instructions to have the account deactivated. You can then complete an account recovery form to regain access to your deactivated account.
  3. Choose a help topic. After logging in you will be asked what you need help with. Choose the topic that best fits your problem. For account deletion requests, you will likely choose one of the following categories:
    • Account and Password → Delete an account
    • Security & Privacy → Identity fraud
    • Security & Privacy → Reporting fraudulent activities
  4. Click on "next". A few links to frequently asked questions will now appear, but they probably won't help you unless you're looking for solutions to specific security issues. Click Next to choose from better options.
  5. Select "Text chat support". Click Text chat support to open a new window and chat with a help desk representative. Ask them to delete your account and let them know why. Once you get hold of an employee, it is only a matter of a few minutes.
    • It may take up to 2 weeks for your account to be permanently deleted. It is useful to have already deleted your personal data from your account, in the manner described below.
  6. Fix any issues. The Skype website is known for certain issues. If you keep getting an error or no chat window appears, try the following solutions:
    • Make sure your browser allows pop-up windows.
    • Try choosing a different help topic (such as "Security & Privacy" instead of "Account and Password").
    • Try a different browser, such as Firefox or Opera.
  7. Contact customer service in other ways. If you are unable to get the right help through chats, you can contact Skype by email ([email protected]), or by filling out this form. It can take up to 24 hours for Skype to respond.

Method 2 of 2: Delete your personal information

  1. Use this method to quickly delete your personal information. You will not delete your account, it will not change your Skype name, but you will delete your name, date of birth and other personal information.
  2. Start Skype. Login with your username and password.
  3. View your profile.
    • On Windows, click on in the menu bar Skype -> Profile -> Change your Profile.
    • On Linux you click Skype name and select your Change Profile.
    • On a Mac, click Archive -> Change Profile.
  4. Delete all personal information. Delete your name, photo, phone number and email addresses
  5. Only your Skype name remains. If you have deleted your personal information, there will only be a Skype name. But people can still find and contact you based on the Skype name.
    • Note: you cannot delete your date of birth. Set the date to a date without meaning, as shown above.
    • Note: If someone has accepted your contact request, you cannot delete your account from their contact list. Only they can do this.
  6. Leave a status message. If you're exchanging this account for a new one, please consider leaving a message with your new Skype name so people can easily find you again.
    • If you give up Skype completely, you can leave a message stating that you are no longer active on Skype.
  7. Disable auto-upgrade. If your balance is being topped up automatically, you must change this now to avoid being charged to your account in the future.
    • Go to your payment settings and click on the link "payment list". You will now be taken to the auto top-up page.
    • Click on the link that disables auto-upgrade.
  8. Please contact customer service. If you still have credits or subscriptions open, you can request a refund from Skype.

Tips

  • Skype does not provide telephone support to customers.
  • Chat support is now available to all Skype users, not just paying customers.

Warnings

  • Skype may ask if you would like to be referred to the community forum for help. Please ignore this notice, the moderators on the forum cannot delete accounts.
