A handy feature of Apple TV is the ability to wirelessly send the screen from your Mac to your TV screen, with the available software, AirPlay. The steps below allow you to display the screen of your laptop or desktop on a television that is suitable for Apple TV. This procedure requires a 2011 or later Mac running Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8) or later operating system and a second or third generation Apple TV connected to a television.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Using the menu bar

1. Turn on your Apple TV.
2. Select the AirPlay icon from the menu bar. The menu is the small white bar at the top of the screen. The AirPlay icon can be found next to the Wifi menu.
3. Select your AppleTV from the drop-down menu. If you have multiple Apple TVs on your network, select the one you want to mirror.
4. Your Mac is now synced with your Apple TV.

Method 2 of 2: Using System Preferences

1. Turn on your Apple TV.
2. Open System Preferences. You can do this by clicking the “System Preferences” icon in your dock, or from the drop-down menu, clicking the Apple icon in the top left corner of the screen.
3. Click on the “Displays” icon.
4. Open the drop-down menu called “AirPlay Mirroring.This will show you a list of AirPlay-enabled devices that are connected to your network.
5. Select your Apple TV from the drop-down menu.
6. Your Mac is now synced with your Apple TV.

Tips

• If you are unsure whether your Mac is new enough to use AirPlay, select "About This Mac" from the Apple menu, and click "More Info." AirPlay works with 2011 or later Macs.
• If you don't see an AirPlay icon on your Mac, make sure both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
• Video mirroring can be a bit slow if you are playing a lot of videos. Close a few windows to reduce the load on your Apple TV.
• If you have an older Mac or are running an older operating system, you may still be able to synchronize your screen with third-party software such as AirParrot.
• If the playback performance is not very high, try connecting your Apple TV to your base station using an ethernet connection.

Warnings

• AirPlay mirroring does not work on first generation Apple TVs.
• AirPlay Mirroring requires a 2011 or later Mac with Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8). Older Macs and Macs with older versions of OSX are not AirPlay capable.
