This wikiHow teaches you how to convert a Notepad file (.txt) into a Microsoft Excel document (.xlsx) in Windows.

To step

  1. Open Microsoft Excel. A quick way to do this is through excel in the search bar and then click Microsoft Excel.
  2. Click on the menu File. This is at the top left of Excel.
  3. click on To open.
  4. Select Text files from the drop-down menu for file types.
  5. Select the text file you want to convert and click To open. This will open the "Text Import Wizard".
  6. Select a data type and click Next one. In the "Original data type" group, select Divorced (if the text file contains data separated by commas, tabs, or some other method), or Fixed width (if the data is in columns with spaces between each field).
  7. Select the used separators or the width of the field and click Next one.
    • If you were in the previous screen Divorced selected, check the box next to the symbol (or "Space" if there is an open space between the fields) that will be used to separate the data fields.
    • Do you have Fixed width selected in the previous screen, follow the onscreen instructions to organize the data as desired.
  8. Select the data type per column. Choose the option under "Data type per column" that best matches what kind of data is in the columns (eg. Text, Date).
  9. click on Complete. The "Save As" window appears (depending on the version of Excel).
  10. Select Excel Workbook ( *. Xlsx) via the "Save As" menu. This option is at the bottom of the window, or can be accessed via "File" in the main menu.
  11. Name the file appropriately and click Save. The text file is now saved as an Excel workbook.
