Do you want your programs to open a different browser when you click on a link? As long as you have another browser installed, you can make it the default browser for all OS X apps. This article will help you with that.

Method 1 of 2: Choosing an Installed Browser

1. Open Safari. You can set any installed browser as the default browser through the Safari settings. Safari can be found in your Dock or in the Applications folder.
2. Click on the Safari menu. This can be found in the top left corner of the screen, after Safari is opened. Select Preferences from the Safari menu.
3. Select the General tab. Click on the "Set Default Browser" menu. This will open a list of other browsers you have installed. If no other browsers are installed, you will need to install one to change the default browser. Popular browsers for OS X include:
   • Mozilla Firefox
   • Google Chrome
   • Opera
4. Click on Exit. Once you have selected the new default browser, click the Exit button. Any links in other programs and apps will automatically open in the browser you have selected.

Method 2 of 2: Make the current browser the default browser

1. Open the browser. Firefox and Chrome can both be set as the default browser through the Preferences or Settings menu respectively. This can be useful if the browser is already open and you don't want to open Safari.
2. Set the browser as default. The process will vary per browser:
   • Chrome: Click the Chrome menu button (☰) and select Preferences. Scroll down at the bottom of the Settings page and click on the "Set Google Chrome as my default browser" button.
   • Firefox: Click the Firefox button and select Options. Click the General tab and then "Make Default".

Tips

• Most web browsers check if they are the default browser when they start. The browser will optionally give you the option to make it the default browser.
