Over time, fluff, dust particles and other dirt particles accumulate in the speakers of your smartphone. You probably don't see this dirt, and if you don't clean the speakers long enough, the sound will start to sound muffled. However, before you go to the store for a repair, there are some excellent techniques that will allow you to clean your phone's speakers from the outside and the inside yourself.

Method 1 of 3: Remove dirt from your phone's speakers with household items

1. Find out where your phone's speakers are. On an iPhone, the speakers are usually located at the bottom and left and right of the charging port. On a Samsung device, the speakers are usually also at the bottom, but they are often to the left or right of the charging port. The telephone speaker is usually located at the top of the front of the phone where you hold the phone to your ear.
   • Consider alternative locations for the speakers, such as on the side near the volume rocker or at the bottom of the front of the phone.
2. Buy a can of compressed air. You can buy compressed air canisters at stationery stores, electronics stores and web shops. Test the can by pointing it down and pressing the button. Check how much air comes out of the can when you press the button.
   • Buy a can with a straw for even more accurate work.
3. Place the straw on the nozzle of the aerosol for more accurate work. Twist the thin straw onto the nozzle of the can of compressed air. Test it out by pointing the can down and pressing the button. Air should blow out of the end of the straw.
   • If you feel air coming out of the sides of the nozzle as you press the button, tighten the straw.
   • Do not use a straw if you are sure you can use the can without it.
4. Remove the second back if you cannot reach the speakers yet. With some phones - usually those from Samsung - you have to remove a second back to get to the openings of the speaker. With this phone you have to loosen another 10 to 13 screws, although the exact number varies by model and manufacturer. Use a small Phillips screwdriver and turn the screws counterclockwise until they loosen. Then pull off the second backing.
   • Peel off the plastic wrap covering the screws, if your phone has one.
   • When you have removed the second back, you can reach the speakers and the openings to clean them. In some cases, however, you can only clean the openings.
   • Click the back on the phone when you have finished cleaning the speakers and tightening the screws. After cleaning, you can put the metal covers back on and click the back onto the phone.

Tips

• If you still have problems after cleaning your speakers, take your phone to a phone shop.
• There may be differences between certain models. This is especially the case with newer models. Whatever phone model you have, never cut wires and connecting cables or do things that you are not entirely sure about. A working phone is better than a clean one.
